Billy Porter Recounts Being 'Dead for Three Days' in Sepsis Crisis

Broadway and television star Billy Porter has opened up about a harrowing medical emergency that left him on life support for days and forced his abrupt departure from a major stage production. The actor, known for his Emmy-winning role in Pose, shared the chilling details during a recent podcast appearance, describing how a kidney stone triggered a life-threatening sepsis infection.

Sepsis Diagnosis and Broadway Exit

In September of last year, Porter was diagnosed with sepsis, a severe immune response to infection that can rapidly damage organs and prove fatal without urgent treatment. This diagnosis compelled him to exit his role in the Broadway revival of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club. According to the Cleveland Clinic, sepsis occurs when the body's defense mechanisms harm its own tissues, often leading to organ failure or death if not addressed immediately.

The Cause and Severity of the Infection

Porter explained that his sepsis stemmed from a kidney stone becoming trapped in his urethra. "When [my doctors] got in there, there was so much pus, and bile, and infection behind the stone. It bubbled up, and I went uroseptic in minutes," he recounted on the Outlaws with TS Madison podcast. Urosepsis is a type of sepsis originating in the urinary tract, and in Porter's case, it escalated swiftly to critical levels.

Life Support and Near-Death Experience

The situation grew so dire that Porter was placed on an ECMO machine, an artificial life-support system used when a patient's heart and lungs cannot function properly. "I was dead for three days," the Tony Award winner stated bluntly. He emphasized his survival as miraculous, adding, "I am a miracle. I'm a walking miracle." Upon regaining consciousness, he faced another complication: compartment syndrome, where muscles constrict and cut off oxygen supply.

Reflections and Recovery Journey

Porter expressed profound gratitude for his survival, calling it "such a gift." The ordeal prompted deep personal reflections, leading to three key realizations: to work smarter, not harder; to be obedient and answer life's call; and to never silence himself again out of fear. He admitted to previously muting his truth unconsciously, worried about losing his status in the entertainment industry.

In December, he updated fans on his recovery, acknowledging the challenges of the past months but assuring them he is on the path to full health. "It was not easy. It's been a very, very challenging four months. And I want everybody to know that I am on the road to a full recovery. I'm not there yet but I'm on the road to that," he shared, thanking supporters for their prayers and positive energy.

Billy Porter's career highlights include his Tony-winning performance in Kinky Boots and his groundbreaking role in Pose. This health scare has not only tested his resilience but also reinforced his commitment to authenticity and perseverance in both his personal and professional life.
