BBC Morning Live Guest Emotional Over Memorial Bench Fundraising for Late Friend
A guest on BBC Morning Live struggled to hold back tears as she shared her mission to raise funds for a memorial bench, fulfilling the last wish of her dear friend and former football teammate. Emma appeared on the show, hosted by Helen Skelton and Rav Wilding, during a segment that explored the costs associated with memorial benches in Torbay.
Heartfelt Tribute to a Young Life Lost
Emma revealed that she is aiming to gather £8,000 to install a bench in memory of Holly Bedford, who passed away in May 2025 at the age of 33 after a battle with stage 4 skin cancer. Speaking with presenter Briony May Williams, Emma described Holly as "bubbly, friendly, warm, and just amazing—a really, really good person." She explained that the bench was one of Holly's final requests, intended to be placed on the football field where they played together.
Emma emphasised the importance of the bench for Holly's legacy, noting that since Holly was so young, her family and friends would benefit from it for many years. The £8,000 fee covers a 25-year sponsorship for a standard memorial bench in Torbay, with maintenance, repair, and replacement included. So far, Emma and her supporters have raised just over £4,000.
Stark Contrast in Council Pricing
Briony May Williams investigated the issue further in her report, highlighting significant disparities in memorial bench costs across different councils. In Torbay, the price for a 25-year sponsored standard bench is £8,000, rising to £12,000 for premium locations like the seafront. In comparison, a neighbouring council offers a 10-year package with maintenance for £1,680, and a London council charges £1,775 for a similar 10-year deal.
The report pointed out that Torbay's pricing is roughly double regional and some national comparisons, sparking discussion about affordability. Emma expressed her hope that costs could be lowered to make such memorials more accessible to grieving families and friends.
Council Response and Ongoing Review
Upon returning to the studio, hosts Helen Skelton and Rav Wilding shared Torbay Council's response. The council stated that it provides a range of memorial options, including plaques on shared benches starting at £550, and that its scheme aims to enhance Torbay's natural beauty. However, it acknowledged that communication around the 25-year term for exclusive benches has not always been clear.
A review is currently underway to ensure better value and clarity for residents and visitors, with the council pledging to handle individual cases sensitively. This news comes as Emma and others continue their fundraising efforts, driven by a desire to honour Holly's memory in a meaningful way.
The emotional segment on BBC Morning Live has shed light on the challenges faced by those seeking to create lasting tributes, while also prompting wider conversation about council pricing and transparency in memorial services.
