A leading veterinary expert has issued an urgent warning to dog owners across the UK, highlighting the potentially fatal dangers of a popular treat found in many homes.
Dr. Anna Foreman, Everypaw Pet Insurance's in-house vet, has specifically called out the risks associated with giving dogs pig ears. While these chews might seem like a harmless snack, they pose a severe choking hazard and can lead to life-threatening intestinal blockages.
Why Are Pig Ears So Dangerous?
The danger lies in the treat's physical properties. "Pig ears are often large, flat, and disc-shaped," explains Dr. Foreman. This specific shape makes them a perfect candidate to become lodged firmly across the roof of a dog's mouth or, even more dangerously, to obstruct their airway entirely, leading to suffocation.
Even if a dog manages to swallow the treat without immediate choking, the risks are far from over. Pig ears are notoriously difficult to digest. Their rigid structure can cause serious internal blockages within the gastrointestinal tract, a medical emergency that almost always requires invasive and costly surgery to resolve.
What Should Dog Owners Do Immediately?
Dr. Foreman's advice is clear and direct: vigilance is key. She strongly urges owners to avoid giving these types of treats to their pets altogether. The potential consequences simply outweigh any perceived benefit.
For those determined to give their dogs chews, she recommends seeking safer, digestible alternatives specifically designed for canine consumption. However, her primary guidance is to always supervise your dog with any treat or chew, no matter how safe it claims to be.
This warning serves as a crucial reminder that not all products marketed for pets are inherently safe. Responsible ownership means scrutinising treats and prioritising your dog's wellbeing over a momentary distraction.
