Two German Shepherd dogs, dubbed among the 'most unwanted' in rescue, have now spent a staggering 730 days—over two years— waiting in kennels for a loving home.
A Heartbreaking Two-Year Wait
Jimmy and Hector, both around five years old, were rescued from a bleak existence in Egypt by the animal welfare charity Miracle's Mission. They were discovered confined to a tiny, dark room with virtually no fresh air or sunlight, their lives defined by isolation. While the charity saved them from that grim fate in early 2024, their search for a permanent family has been fraught with disappointment.
Emma, a rescue worker with Miracle's Mission, expressed her dismay at the pair's ongoing plight. "They’ve had applications, but everyone has pulled out for their own reasons - nothing to do with the boys," she revealed. Each potential adoption has fallen through at the last minute due to applicants' personal circumstances, leaving the dogs in a state of perpetual limbo.
Loving Giants in Need of a Break
Described as affectionate and friendly, both dogs have been successfully tested around other dogs, cats, and children. Weighing a combined 80kg, their substantial size is the primary hurdle to finding a home. Their adoption profile states they are "very hard to home as a pair of very large dogs."
Having relied solely on each other for comfort during their years of neglect, the bond between Jimmy and Hector is unbreakable. Rescuers are adamant that they must be rehomed together to avoid causing them further emotional trauma. "We would love for them to be rehomed by one loving family so we don’t have to separate them and break their hearts," the charity's statement explains.
How You Can Help Jimmy and Hector
Both dogs are now neutered, rabies-tested, and are prepared to travel to the UK to meet approved adopters. For those unable to offer a home, the charity is urgently appealing for donations to cover their considerable boarding costs. Recent expenses include extra food and veterinary treatment after Hector suffered from heatstroke, highlighting the urgent need to move them from the Egyptian climate.
"They really cannot face another summer in Egypt," the appeal notes, adding that rehoming them would free up vital resources to help other sick and injured animals. The public can support Jimmy and Hector's journey, or the work of Miracle's Mission with other animals, by visiting the charity's official website.
