Spring has brought a delightful invasion of robin chicks to a home in Gloucestershire, as a 10-year-old writer recounts the antics of the fledglings that have taken over her kitchen and even her mother's hair.
A Sign of Spring
After four months of darkness in the valley, the return of birdsong marks the arrival of spring. The robin, a year-round singer, has been particularly noticeable this year. Bold and curious, these birds have been sneaking into the kitchen for crumbs.
The Nesting Pair
A pair of robins built a nest in the eaves near the courtyard earlier than usual. The writer watched them carry twigs and moss, then heard the high-pitched buzz of hungry chicks. As the chicks grew, their cries intensified, and the parents worked tirelessly.
Fledging Adventures
One sunny morning, the chicks fledged, and one landed in the writer's mother's hair. Her father had to gently rescue it and place it in a sheltered bush. The family spent the afternoon watching the young birds hop about and find their feet.
It was surprising to see that young robins lack the red breast of adults, instead sporting brown plumage with golden flecks. Robins often have two to three broods, so the writer hopes to see another batch of chicks up close.
