A severely overweight hamster named Chunk has been rescued by the RSPCA after growing so large he could no longer squeeze through his cage door. The chubby rodent was found in a concerning state, unable to move freely due to his excessive size.
The animal welfare charity has now issued a warning to pet owners about the dangers of overfeeding small animals. "Chunk's case highlights how easily hamsters can become obese when given unlimited access to food," said an RSPCA spokesperson.
From Fluffy to Fat: Chunk's Transformation
The hamster, described as "more round than a ball," was surrendered to the RSPCA's Bury St Edmunds branch in Suffolk. Staff were shocked to discover that:
- Chunk weighed nearly double a healthy hamster's weight
- His excessive size prevented normal movement and cage access
- The condition likely developed from constant access to fatty foods
Road to Recovery
Animal care specialists have put Chunk on a strict diet and exercise regimen to help him shed the excess weight. "We're gradually introducing more vegetables and limiting high-fat seeds," explained a veterinary nurse. "We've also created a larger enclosure with ramps to encourage movement."
The RSPCA emphasizes that while chubby hamsters might look cute, obesity can lead to serious health problems including:
- Diabetes
- Heart disease
- Joint problems
- Reduced lifespan
Prospective adopters interested in giving Chunk a new home will need to demonstrate their commitment to maintaining his healthier lifestyle once he reaches an appropriate weight.
