Essential improvement works are progressing at Cyfarthfa Castle and Park in Merthyr Tydfil, with vital roof repairs and drainage upgrades now underway. The project is funded by Cadw, Merthyr Tydfil council, the Welsh Government, and The Cyfarthfa Foundation, aimed at protecting the historic fabric of the building and addressing long-term maintenance needs.
Key Works and Timeline
The drainage improvement works are expected to be completed within the next few months, while the roof repairs are scheduled for completion next year. Despite the ongoing construction, Cyfarthfa Park and Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery remain open to the public. The museum is currently hosting the Celebration of Welsh Contemporary Painting 2026 exhibition, which runs until August 30.
A council spokesperson stated: "By tackling these issues now, we are taking proactive steps to preserve this iconic landmark and reduce the risk of more significant deterioration in the future."
Enhancements Inside and Out
Within Cyfarthfa Museum and Art Gallery, improvements include upgrades to toilets, the reception area, shop, and café, as well as new WiFi, CCTV, and a cinema display. In the park, new signs, picnic benches, and bins have been installed. The council noted: "These improvements strengthen the visitor experience, improve accessibility, and ensure that the park continues to be a high-quality destination for local communities and visitors alike."
The council and The Cyfarthfa Foundation remain committed to securing additional investment, stating: "We look forward to providing further updates as the current programme of works progresses and as future opportunities for investment and enhancement are developed."
