A much-loved stag has been brutally slaughtered in a County Dublin park, with the decapitated body discovered by horrified staff on Thursday morning.
Shocking Discovery at Newbridge Demesne
The stag, an eight-year-old male who was one of only two stags in the herd of Irish Red Deer at Newbridge Demesne in Donabate, was found dead after intruders forced their way into the park overnight. Staff made the grim discovery on Thursday, November 27th, when they arrived to feed the deer herd.
Fingal County Council released a statement condemning the callous killing, confirming the animal had been murdered and beheaded by trespassers. The stag was a cherished public attraction, famous for his magnificent antlers and gentle nature, adored by families visiting North County Dublin.
Community and Official Outrage
The Mayor of Fingal, Tom O'Leary, expressed his profound shock, recalling visits to the park with his granddaughters. "A wonderful animal to behold close up," he said. "It's truly shocking that someone would carry out this act." He has urged anyone with information to come forward.
Ivan Smith, the Foreman of Works at Newbridge House and Traditional Farm, echoed the sentiment, stating they were "absolutely shocked by this incident." He described the stag as a "lovely stag with a beautiful pair of antlers and a big favourite with the public."
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the illegal killing. An Garda Síochána and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) are leading the inquiry. It is illegal to kill deer without a licence in Ireland.
