Funding Allocation and Objectives
Merthyr Tydfil Council has outlined how it intends to spend £1.5 million from the UK Government's Pride in Place Impact Fund. The funding, which must be used by March 2027, targets improvements in community spaces, public spaces, and high streets across the county borough. According to a report presented to the council's cabinet on July 15, 2026, the money can be spent anywhere in the borough as long as it supports areas most in need and meets one or more of the fund's objectives.
Revised Spending Plan
Initially, in January 2026, the cabinet allocated £750,000 for public realm and community infrastructure improvements in the southern area and £750,000 for regenerating key heritage assets in the town centre. However, after securing other funding, the £750,000 originally earmarked for heritage assets has been freed for a different purpose. The new proposal directs this sum toward a package of capital projects focused on regenerating, enhancing, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of key community assets and public spaces, particularly in Merthyr Tydfil town centre and the northern wards.
The report states that to maximize benefits, minimize risk within programme timescales, and enhance community impact, the remaining £750,000 will be spent on playground development, public art, and key building and asset improvements.
Background of the Pride in Place Fund
Launched in September 2025, the UK Government's Pride in Place strategy aims for long-term transformation through a capital investment programme. The impact fund is a key component, designed to support local authorities in revitalizing areas most in need.
