Tragic Discovery at Penrith Station
A distressing incident at Penrith railway station has resulted in the deaths of two dogs. The tragedy unfolded on Wednesday afternoon when a member of the public alerted authorities after hearing barks emanating from a metal bike storage compartment.
NSW Police responded to the scene at approximately 4pm. With assistance from Fire and Rescue NSW officers, they were forced to break open the locker. Inside, they made a grim discovery: two greyhounds trapped within the confined space.
Fatal Consequences and Legal Action
The situation was dire. One dog was already deceased, while the second was suffering from severe heatstroke. Despite being rushed to a nearby veterinary clinic for emergency treatment, the second greyhound could not be saved.
The following morning, at around 9:30am on Thursday, police located the alleged culprit, 57-year-old Sandy Norrie, on nearby Station Street. Mr Norrie was subsequently arrested and has been hit with a total of ten animal cruelty offences.
Charges and Court Proceedings
The charges brought against Sandy Norrie are extensive and severe. They include:
- Two counts of recklessly beating and killing an animal
- Two counts of committing an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal
- Two counts of confining an animal in a cage of dimensions inadequate for exercise
- Two counts of committing an act of cruelty upon an animal
- Two counts of being in charge of an animal and failing to exercise care
Mr Norrie faced Penrith Local Court on Thursday, where he was refused bail. His case has been adjourned, and he is scheduled to reappear in court on November 27 to answer the charges.
