Ealing Trailfinders produced one of the biggest upsets in Premiership Women's Rugby history, defeating three-time defending champions Gloucester-Hartpury 29-26 in a thrilling semi-final. The result ended Gloucester's reign of dominance and set up a final against Saracens, who narrowly beat Exeter 40-38 in a tense match at the Stone X Stadium.
Trailfinders End Gloucester's Title Run
Gloucester-Hartpury had won the last three PWR titles, but an injury-hit squad and recent poor performances culminated in a stunning defeat. Trailfinders, who have never lost to Saracens, will now face them in the final on 28 June. Gloucester had inflicted Saracens' only two league losses this season and beaten them in last year's final, making this upset even more significant.
Saracens Survive Exeter Scare
Saracens' semi-final was a seesaw affair, with Exeter leading until the 75th minute. The visitors' scrum, led by USA international Hope Rogers who scored two first-half tries, caused Saracens problems. However, PWR player of the season Olivia Apps inspired a comeback, scoring two tries, while Zoe Harrison's near-perfect goal-kicking (missing only one of six) proved crucial. Jess Breach sealed the win with a stunning solo try five minutes from time.
Rogers expressed disappointment: "It was in our hands to win and to lose it at the end... overwhelming feelings of disappointment." Apps, however, looked ahead: "I am excited for the final. Trailfinders are a really strong side. It is going to be a great match-up."
Final Set for Thriller
The two semi-finals highlighted the growing competitiveness of the league. Saracens, who dominated from 2017-22, hope to regain the title, but Trailfinders have shown they can upset the odds. With both teams in form, the final promises to be a tense and exciting encounter.
