American Bulldog Angel's 1,300-Day Journey to a Forever Home
In a heartwarming tale of patience and compassion, a nine-year-old American bulldog named Angel has finally found her permanent home after an astonishing 1,300 days in the care of Dogs Trust. This remarkable journey, which spanned over three and a half years, underscores the challenges faced by some rescue dogs in finding suitable families.
A Lengthy Wait Against the Odds
Angel arrived at the Dogs Trust rehoming centre in Merseyside back in 2022, and her stay far exceeded the typical 60-day period most dogs experience before adoption. Her extended time in care was partly due to public confusion surrounding her breed, with many potential adopters wary of American bulldogs because of their resemblance to XL bullies. It is crucial to note that American bulldogs are a distinct breed and are not subject to the ban affecting XL bullies, which requires a certificate of exemption for ownership in the UK.
Despite being a loving and gentle dog who formed strong bonds with staff at the centre, Angel's nervousness around some men made finding the right home a prolonged process. Her struggle with kennel life led to an 18-month stay with foster carers, Katie and Tom Gibson in Winsford, Cheshire, which proved transformative for her well-being.
The Perfect Match in Liverpool
Angel's fortunes changed this year when Carolyn Murray and her family from Liverpool, who had recently lost their own dog, visited Dogs Trust Merseyside. Upon reading Angel's story and learning about her lengthy wait, Carolyn felt an immediate connection. "When I saw Angel’s story and how long she had been waiting, something just clicked," she recalls. "Meeting her changed everything. She settled into our home so quickly and it was amazing to see how different and relaxed she was compared to the kennel environment. We feel incredibly lucky to have her as part of our family."
After several visits to ensure a good fit, the Murray family made the decision to adopt Angel, giving her the forever home she had long deserved. This adoption marks a new beginning for Angel, who is now celebrating the new year in a loving household.
The Vital Role of Foster Care
Georgina Lowery, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Merseyside, expressed immense joy at Angel's adoption. "We are over the moon that Angel is starting the new year in a new, permanent home," she said. "She is such a loving pooch; a big dog with a big heart and we are so pleased she has found a home with Carolyn and her family who we are sure will show her how good life can be."
Lowery emphasised the critical importance of foster care in Angel's story. "Angel’s story shows just how life-changing foster care can be. Without the support of our volunteer foster families, dogs like Angel may struggle to cope with long stays in kennels. Foster carers give dogs the chance to show who they really are in a home environment, which can make all the difference in helping them find their forever home."
Currently, Dogs Trust is experiencing a record number of enquiries from individuals considering surrendering their pets, placing significant strain on rehoming centres across the country. As a result, volunteer foster carers are needed more than ever to provide temporary homes for dogs awaiting adoption. The charity covers all associated costs, including food, bedding, and veterinary treatment, making it accessible for those willing to open their homes.
Angel's successful adoption serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience of rescue animals and the profound impact that foster care and patient adoption processes can have on their lives.
