The Grainger Market in Newcastle city centre was evacuated on Saturday morning following an electrical fire. The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) confirmed that one fire appliance responded to Nun Street shortly after 10:00 am.

Fire Service Response

A TWFRS spokesperson stated: "We have been in attendance at Nun Street earlier today to an electrical fire though are no longer in attendance. The initial call time was 10:04 am and we had one fire appliance on scene. We had left the scene by 11:33 am."

Visitors to the recently renovated market were later instructed to leave the premises. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Market Renovation

The Grainger Market, a 190-year-old Geordie institution, recently underwent a £9 million restoration. The renovation aimed to transform the Georgian market, which has been a central part of Newcastle since 1835, into a venue capable of competing with the best markets across Europe.

The market's historical significance and recent upgrades make it a key attraction in the city. The evacuation disrupted Saturday shopping for many residents and tourists.
