Andy Burnham Urged to End Beer Ban at Football Grounds

Tom Willerton-Gartside, Head of Press at Looking for Growth, argues that Andy Burnham should immediately end the ban on drinking beer at football stadium seats, a rule he says treats fans like children and is out of step with the rest of the world.

The Absurdity of the Ban

In Britain, it is illegal for fans to drink alcohol while watching a men's professional football match from their seats, despite being allowed to drink in the concourse. This contrasts sharply with other countries and even other sports in the UK. At rugby matches at Twickenham, cricket at Headingley's Western Terrace, or tennis at Wimbledon, fans can enjoy a drink while watching. Yet football supporters are denied this simple pleasure.

Willerton-Gartside calls this "madness" and points out that in Dortmund's Yellow Wall, fans routinely drink beer without incident. The ban, he says, is based on a distrust of football fans that is not applied to other sporting audiences.

Football Belongs to the Fans

The article argues that football is the people's game, and fans deserve to be treated as adults. "Football belongs to the fans. They are the ones who fill the stands, create the atmosphere, and keep the traditions of the game alive. They deserve to be treated as adults, not children," Willerton-Gartside writes.

He contends that the ban is symptomatic of a broader culture of over-regulation that stifles ordinary joys, from pub licences to food vans. The debate, he says, is not really about alcohol but about whether the British people are still allowed to have fun without state permission.

A Call for Change

Willerton-Gartside urges Andy Burnham, as the Prime Minister in waiting, to make his mark by ending the ban. "To take football back from the state, and give it back to the fans, Andy Burnham must end the ban on beers. Supporters are not problems to be managed, but people to be trusted," he writes.

The article concludes that the best moments in life are spontaneous and emotional, and football has always been about those moments. "Andy Burnham must get the state out of the stadium, and bring back the pints," Willerton-Gartside says.
