Gardening Expert Reveals Sheep's Wool as Top Slug Deterrent
Sheep's Wool: Best Natural Slug Deterrent, Says Expert

A gardening expert with more than 25 years of experience has shared his top tip for keeping slugs at bay using a natural barrier—and it is not through the use of eggshells or bark. Simon Akeroyd, a bestselling author and professional gardener, recommends sheep's wool as an effective slug deterrent.

Why Sheep's Wool Works

Slugs thrive in damp conditions and can cause significant damage to garden plants and vegetables. They leave ragged holes in leaves, shred seedlings, and create slime trails that can kill new growth. Simon explains that slugs dislike moving over the uncomfortable, dry, fibrous material. He suggests collecting wool from barbed wire or branches during countryside walks and placing it around plants in pots or along rows of vegetables.

Additional Benefits

Sheep's wool also acts as a great mulch, retaining moisture and suppressing weeds. While it is not 100% protection, it does seem to reduce damage. Simon advises ensuring the wool is free from recent flea treatments if using dog hair as an alternative.

In a recent TikTok video, Simon's tip received positive feedback. One user shared success with echinacea transplants, while another praised the account for ongoing learning. However, some noted that coffee grounds did not work for them, and one asked about dog hair, to which Simon confirmed it works if free from flea treatment.

Simon's new book, Way to Grow, released on April 9, offers 100 tips for saving time and money, including reusing coffee grounds, watering with string, and growing potatoes in chicken wire towers.
