A 'beautiful, peaceful' beach in Kent has been named the UK's top destination for an active summer staycation, according to new research by SportsCover Direct. The study analysed popular beaches across five categories, including water quality, lifeguard provision, Blue Flag status, sunshine hours, and sea temperatures, to find the best spots for a coastal escape.
Joss Bay, near Broadstairs on the Isle of Thanet, claimed the number one spot. The 200-metre-long sandy beach received maximum points for water quality, rated 'Excellent' by the Environment Agency, and enjoyed the highest average July sunshine hours in the top ten at 243 hours. It also holds both Blue Flag and Seaside Awards and is lifeguarded daily from May to September.
While Cornwall and Devon are renowned for their beaches, they did not top the list. Croyde Bay in North Devon came second, followed by two Cornish favourites: Fistral Beach and Sennen Cove. Despite missing the top spot, the South West still boasts some of the warmest July sea temperatures, with Sennen Cove reaching 16.6°C.
The study highlights that the UK offers a diverse range of beach experiences, from golden sands to rugged coves. Joss Bay, accessible from London in about two hours by train or car, provides excellent surfing conditions and has been praised by visitors on social media as a 'beautiful, peaceful beach' even on the hottest days.
