Wunmi Mosaku Triumphs at BAFTA Ceremony in London

Actress Wunmi Mosaku, star of the vampire drama Sinners, was among the first winners as the British Academy Film Awards commenced at London's Royal Festival Hall on Sunday evening. Following a glamorous red carpet event attended by Hollywood's elite, the ceremony unfolded within the iconic venue to announce the recipients of the prestigious honours.

Mosaku, who is currently expecting her second child, expressed heartfelt gratitude from the stage, thanking her husband, family, and daughter. She revealed that her mother had 'beamed' love at her, providing the freedom to make her own choices. Reflecting on her role as priestess Annie in Sinners, Mosaku shared that she connected with a part of herself that she had 'dimmed as an immigrant trying to fit in.'

From Manchester to Hollywood Stardom

The role of Hoodoo priestess Annie was written specifically for Mosaku by director Ryan Coogler. Raised in Manchester, she spent eleven years singing with the Manchester Girls' Choir before graduating from RADA. Her breakthrough came in the 2010 film I Am Slave, where she portrayed a Sudanese girl sold into slavery, catapulting her into the spotlight.

Mosaku previously won a TV BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Gloria Taylor, mother of Damilola Taylor, in Damilola, Our Loved Boy. Her filmography includes major blockbusters such as Deadpool & Wolverine and Batman vs Superman. Born in Zaria, Nigeria to parents who are both professors, she now resides in Los Angeles.

'It's just been the best feeling ever because we really loved this film,' said Mosaku, who has earned critical acclaim for her performances. Of Sinners, she added: 'We really poured everything we had into it, and so the audiences showing up and showing so much love for the film last year was so overwhelming and so affirming. Now to have these nominations come in, it's just been the cherry on top.'

BAFTA Awards Kick Off with Visual Effects Honour

The first award of the evening was for Special Visual Effects, presented to Avatar: Fire and Ash. This year's Special Award recipients include Dame Donna Langley, who will receive the BAFTA Fellowship, the highest accolade from the arts charity. As the British Chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment, she is celebrated for her prolific career and status as one of the most influential figures in the entertainment industry.

Additionally, Clare Binns, Creative Director of Picture House Cinemas, will be honoured with the BAFTA Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award. This recognition highlights her role in championing diverse and fiercely independent work on big screens across the United Kingdom.

Competition Heats Up with Multiple Nominations

One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, leads with a remarkable fourteen nominations at this year's ceremony. However, it faces stiff competition from supernatural horror Sinners, which has thirteen nominations, and Hamnet, director Chloé Zhao's moving drama about the death of Shakespeare's only son, with eleven nominations.

Adapted from Maggie O'Farrell's award-winning novel about the Bard's family life, Hamnet has broken the record for the most nominations for a female-directed film in BAFTA history. Irish star Jessie Buckley has been nominated for her lead role, having already secured a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice Award, along with nominations for the Academy Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Co-star Paul Mescal, overlooked during Oscar nominations, is also hoping for a BAFTA award after earning a Supporting Actor nod. Elsewhere, Marty Supreme and Timothée Chalamet aim for success with eleven BAFTA nominations, including Best Film and Best Actor, following recent wins at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.

Frankenstein and Sentimental Value each have eight nominations, while I Swear and Bugonia have five each. The Ballad of Wallis Island, Pillion, and F1 each received three nominations.
