The BBC has released first-look images from the upcoming third series of its hit crime drama Vigil, which will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One later this year. The six-part series, produced by World Productions, has finished filming in Svalbard and Scotland.
DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) and DI Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) return for a new case set at a remote Arctic research station, where a member of a covert British special forces mission has been shot dead. The pair must catch the killer and defuse a potential international confrontation driven by a land-grab for energy and resources in the changing polar climate, with both their careers and relationship on the line.
Returning cast members include Gary Lewis as DS Robertson and Dominic Mafham as Sir Ian Downing. New cast additions for series three include Jeppe Beck Laursen, Steven Miller, Naomi Yang, Benjamin Wainwright, Tornike Gogrichiani, Danusia Samal, Artur Zai Barrera, Jordan Duvigneau, Kaisa Hammarlund, Adam Fidusiewicz, Eric Godon, Conor Berry, Amy Manson, Jason Tobin, Steven Cree, Killian Coyle, Derek Riddell, Alma Prelec, Dawn Sievewright, and Shereen Cutkelvin.
Premiering in 2021, Vigil has been one of the UK's most successful dramas this decade. It was nominated for Best Drama Series at the 2022 BAFTA Television Awards and won the International Emmy for Best Drama Series. Series two, which aired in 2023 and focused on a deadly drone attack, launched to nearly nine million viewers and was among the BBC's top three most-watched dramas of the year.
Series three is written and created by Tom Edge, with additional writers Tom Mair and Eve Hedderwick Turner. The producer is Marcus Wilson, and executive producers are Jake Lushington, Gaynor Holmes, Stephanie Fyfe, and Tom Edge. The series is directed by Gareth Bryn and Faye Gilbert. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.
All previous series of Vigil are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
