TV Tonight: The Cage, Secret Garden, and More

When the chips are down, BBC One's new drama The Cage delivers a gripping tale of desperation and trust. Created by Tony Schumacher, the writer behind The Responder, this series shifts focus from gritty policing to a chintzy Liverpool casino. Sheridan Smith and Michael Socha play workers who discover they are both secretly skimming from the business. She is a stressed single mother fighting to keep her family home, while he is a semi-recovering addict grappling with gambling, substance abuse, and loan sharks. The title refers to the cashier's cage where money and chips are exchanged, but Schumacher is more invested in the crushing circumstances that trap his flawed yet relatable characters. The show airs Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.

Secret Garden

At 7pm on BBC One, Secret Garden takes viewers to the secluded Wye Valley in Wales, where wildlife cameraman Robin and his family live in a cottage "nestled in a sea of green." Ironically, despite his profession, there is plenty of wildlife in his own backyard—only more hidden. From tiny hibernating dormice to badgers, buff-tailed bumblebees, and "trees haunted by tawny owls," all are captured with spectacular photography.

Cruising to the Ends of the Earth

Channel 4's new travel series Cruising to the Ends of the Earth at 8pm is unapologetically maximalist, promising breathtaking sites and very large ships. In the first episode, viewers board the giant Diamond Princess in Yokohama to sail past jaw-dropping Japanese landscapes. Alongside majestic scenery, there are shades of Cruising With Jane McDonald, including an ancient sake barrel ceremony that resembles a provincial bingo callout.

The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer

Channel 4 at 7pm brings intimate revelations in the tent as the latest Celebrity Bake Off showstopper demands a doughy, floury rendering of participants' most memorable dates. The celebrities include Roman Kemp, Sarah Beeny, Maxine Peake, and Chicken Shop Date's Amelia Dimoldenberg, who should have no trouble with this assignment.

Harry Wild

At 8pm on U&Drama, the campy Irish murder-of-the-week drama Harry Wild makes Murder, She Wrote look highbrow. This week, a tip from her granddaughter leads Harry (Jane Seymour) and Fergus (Rohan Nedd) to investigate the disappearance of two ballroom dancers. Perfect for switching off.

Your Song

Channel 4 at 9pm presents the mawkish karaoke competition Your Song, in the vein of The Piano. This week it heads to London, featuring more punters performing songs that "tell their story"—allowing producers to include emotional backstories. Highlights include a 90-year-old who regained his voice after a stroke by singing Sinatra and a father-son duet on a meaningful lullaby.
