Film Choice
Aftersun (Charlotte Wells, 2022), Netflix
What an utterly lovely, delicately heartbreaking film Charlotte Wells has made. The mysteries of adulthood and the loss of innocence are wrapped up in a summer holiday in Turkey taken by 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) and her dad, Calum (Paul Mescal). Amid lazy days by the hotel pool, buffets, boat trips, and excursions to ancient ruins, Calum's hidden melancholy surfaces. It is mitigated by the tenderness of his relationship with his daughter, but something gnaws at him. — Simon Wardell
