Sky is set to premiere a profoundly moving and darkly compelling new drama this week, an adaptation of the celebrated novel by Nick Cave. 'The Death of Bunny Munro' promises to be a poignant exploration of grief and fatherhood, led by a stellar performance from Matt Smith.
When and Where to Watch
Mark your calendars for a major television event. The entire series of 'The Death of Bunny Munro', all six episodes, will be released in one go on Sky and its streaming partner NOW on Wednesday, November 20. This binge-worthy release strategy allows audiences to fully immerse themselves in the harrowing journey of its protagonist.
A Stellar Cast Led by Matt Smith
The series boasts an impressive ensemble cast, headlined by Matt Smith (The Crown, Doctor Who, House of the Dragon). He takes on the challenging role of the titular character, Bunny Munro, a sex-addicted salesman of beauty products who is grappling with the recent death of his wife.
Opposite him, child star Rafael Mathé makes his television debut as Bunny Junior, the son Bunny is suddenly forced to care for. Sarah Greene (Bad Sisters) portrays Libby, Bunny's late wife, whose memory haunts the narrative.
The supporting cast is equally formidable, featuring Johann Myers (The Wheel of Time) as Poodle, Bunny's friend and co-worker, and Robert Glenister (Sherwood) as Geoffrey, Bunny's concerned boss. Other key players include Alice Feetham, David Threlfall, Lindsay Duncan, and Elizabeth Berrington.
A Gripping Plot of Grief and a Serial Killer
Set in 2003 against the dramatic backdrop of Brighton's pier burning down, the story follows Bunny Munro in the devastating aftermath of his wife's suicide. Left to raise his nine-year-old son, Junior, Bunny attempts to maintain his womanising lifestyle on the road, all while being plagued by intergenerational trauma he fears passing on.
As if this internal struggle weren't enough, a terrifying external threat emerges. A horned serial killer is on a rampage, moving steadily south towards Bunny and his son. The series becomes a tense race against time, both externally and internally, as Bunny unravels and desperately tries to prevent his son from following him down a dark path.
Interestingly, the project was originally conceived as a film by Nick Cave two decades ago. When the screenplay failed to gain traction, the multi-talented artist transformed it into his 2010 novel, which has now found its ideal form as this six-part television drama.
Reflecting on the core of the story, Matt Smith described it as a tale about "a father and son, and the sins of the father." He added, "We meet a man on the precipice of a breakdown, really. His wife dies. He's then left to care for his young son, which he finds very difficult."
'The Death of Bunny Munro' arrives on Sky and NOW on November 20.
