Sky's 'Bold' New Thriller: Stieg Larsson's Millennium Series Gets 8-Part Reimagining
Sky's 'Bold' New Thriller Adapts Stieg Larsson Novels

Sky has unveiled plans for a major new television drama, announcing on Tuesday, 13th January 2026, that it is developing a fresh adaptation of the iconic crime novel 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'.

A Contemporary Take on a Crime Classic

The British broadcaster has commissioned an eight-part series based on Stieg Larsson's bestselling Millennium novels. The project is in the hands of the acclaimed production company Left Bank Pictures, known for its work on prestige dramas like The Crown and Dept Q.

Described as a "bold and contemporary reimagining", the series aims to transport the essence of the 2005 literary phenomenon into the present day. The producers have stated that the show will be "grounded in the characters and investigative DNA of Stieg Larsson's Millennium novels, with themes that carry heightened relevance today".

The original story follows journalist Mikael Blomkvist, hired to solve the decades-old disappearance of a young woman from a powerful Swedish family. His investigation leads him to form a complex partnership with the brilliant but troubled hacker, Lisbeth Salander.

Creative Team and Production Details

The writing and executive production duties will be led by Steve Lightfoot (The Punisher, Spider-Noir) and Angela LaManna (The Haunting of Bly Manor). They will be joined by executive producers Andy Harries, Charlotte Moore, and John Phillips for Left Bank Pictures, along with Sam Hoyle.

While anticipation builds, key details remain under wraps. Casting announcements and a specific release date are yet to be confirmed by the studio.

This is not the first time Larsson's work has been adapted for the screen. The novels were originally filmed as a Swedish-language trilogy starring Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace. A Hollywood version directed by David Fincher, featuring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, followed in 2011. The story continued in 2018 with The Girl in the Spider's Web, which saw Claire Foy take on the role of Lisbeth Salander.

Enduring Legacy and Global Release

More than twenty years after its publication, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo remains a landmark in modern crime fiction, captivating readers with its intricate plotting and unforgettable characters. Fan reviews consistently praise its gripping narrative, with one reader calling it an "absolutely brilliant" book that hooked them from the very first chapter.

The new Sky adaptation will be available to viewers in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Sony Pictures Television will handle distribution for the United States market.
