Hollywood Icon Shirley MacLaine Spotted Living Life to the Fullest at 91

Screen legend Shirley MacLaine proved she is still embracing every moment when she was spotted enjoying a rare public outing in Malibu last Saturday. The 91-year-old Oscar winner was seen soaking up the California sunshine while dining outdoors at one of her favourite local spots, Kristy's Village Cafe.

MacLaine, who was accompanied by a male assistant, maintained a cool and casual appearance in a navy blue sweatshirt layered with a purple zip-up hoodie and grey-green sweatpants. She elevated her relaxed ensemble with striking accessories - large round-frame sunglasses and a piercing scarlet hat with a wide brim.

Unconventional Assistant Requirements and Career Reflections

Interestingly, this sighting comes after reports emerged last year about MacLaine's unusual requirements for a personal assistant. According to insiders who spoke with the Daily Mail, the actress was seeking someone who would be willing to share a nightly cocktail with her at 5 p.m. while discussing her legendary film career.

The sources revealed that MacLaine wanted an assistant who was sufficiently knowledgeable about her extensive body of work to engage in meaningful conversations about her movies. The actress reportedly promised to be very generous with compensation for the right candidate who could meet these distinctive requirements.

A Legendary Career Spanning Nearly Seven Decades

Shirley MacLaine's remarkable career began in 1955 when she made her film debut in Alfred Hitchcock's black comedy The Trouble With Harry. Her performance earned her the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year - Actress.

Despite numerous classic films throughout the 1950s and 1960s including The Apartment (1960) and Irma la Douce (1963), MacLaine didn't win her first and only Oscar until 1983 for her performance in Terms of Endearment. The film also earned her co-star Jack Nicholson an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Some of her more recent performances include roles in Bewitched (2005), Bernie (2011), and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013).

Staying Active in Her Nineties

Remarkably, MacLaine continues to maintain an active career well into her nineties. Her most recent appearances include a two-episode guest arc on Only Murders In The Building in 2022 and last month's starring role in American Dreamers alongside Peter Dinklage.

Earlier this month, Variety reported that the actress will feature in the road-trip comedy Lucy Boomer alongside Ansel Elgort. The film is scheduled to begin filming in New Mexico this February under the direction of Howard Deutch, known for Pretty In Pink.

When speaking with Extra in 2024 about her 90th birthday plans, MacLaine revealed she would celebrate by working on a new project in Atlantic City rather than having a large party. She did express some nostalgia for Hollywood's earlier days, commenting that the glamour has gone out a bit with the rise of streaming services.

The actress, who is the older sister of fellow Hollywood icon Warren Beatty, celebrated her 91st birthday this past April. She splits her time between Malibu and her ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico, located about an hour's drive north of Santa Fe.

MacLaine has credited her impressive longevity to her decades-long devotion to dance, which she began studying at just three years old. She told People last year that dance taught her discipline, love of music, and how to work with people while dealing with pain. She continues to appreciate her health and ability to keep working alongside maintaining strong friendships.
