Richard Osman Steps Down as Host of BBC's House of Games After Nine Years
Richard Osman Quits BBC's House of Games After Nine Years

In a significant development for British television, Richard Osman has announced his departure from the BBC2 quiz programme House of Games, concluding a successful nine-year tenure as host. The popular presenter and bestselling author revealed that he will film one final week of episodes before handing over the reins to a new host, marking the end of an era for the beloved daytime show.

A Fond Farewell After Nine Successful Series

Richard Osman, who first took on hosting duties when House of Games launched in 2017, expressed both gratitude and excitement about his decision to step down. The series has consistently attracted substantial audiences, with the current ninth season drawing approximately 1.6 million viewers per episode, solidifying its status as a cornerstone of BBC2's daytime programming.

"It has been such a great pleasure, and honour, to present House of Games for the last nine years, with the absolute best team in television," Osman stated. "But it's time to let someone else have a go, and I'm very excited to hand over the House keys to the lucky new host."

Production Company and BBC Executives React

Tamara Gilder, joint managing director of Remarkable Entertainment, the production company behind House of Games, acknowledged Osman's significant contribution to the programme's success. "We are incredibly grateful to Richard for being the most brilliant host for the past nine series and will miss him so very much," Gilder remarked. "House of Games is a hugely popular show, and we have some exciting plans… all will be revealed soon."

BBC daytime controller Rob Unsworth emphasized Osman's integral role in establishing the show's popularity with viewers. "Richard Osman has established House of Games as one of our best-loved shows," Unsworth noted. "His contribution to its success is impossible to overstate, and we couldn't be more grateful for his work over the last nine years."

Focus Shifts to Writing Career and Future Hosting Plans

This departure follows Osman's 2022 exit from the BBC quiz show Pointless, where he previously served as co-host alongside Alexander Armstrong. At that time, Osman cited his burgeoning writing career as the primary reason for leaving, particularly the global success of his Thursday Murder Club novel series, which has been adapted into a film by director Steven Spielberg.

"The books had become such a juggernaut around the world I simply couldn't keep up with my schedule," Osman explained regarding his Pointless departure. His former co-host Alexander Armstrong commented on the latest development, stating, "Daytime television's loss is international best-selling crime fiction's gain. I'm going to miss the big man next to me Monday to Friday."

Regarding the future of House of Games, BBC executives have hinted at potential changes to the hosting structure. One option under consideration involves implementing a rotating panel of hosts, similar to the approach taken when Osman left Pointless three years ago. The BBC has promised to announce the new hosting arrangements shortly, ensuring continuity for the programme's dedicated audience.

As Richard Osman transitions away from regular television presenting duties, his focus will remain on his successful literary career, while House of Games prepares to enter a new chapter with fresh leadership at the helm.
