Macaulay Culkin has suggested he would consider returning to his iconic role as Kevin McCallister in a new ‘Home Alone’ film, provided the concept is right. During a stop on his ‘A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin’ tour, the actor revealed a pitch he has developed for a sequel.
Culkin’s idea sees Kevin as a widower or divorcee raising a son, who becomes locked out of their home. The son then sets traps to prevent his father from re-entering, reversing the original film’s premise. “The house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship,” Culkin explained, adding that Kevin must “get let back into [his] son’s heart.”
The actor, who became a household name after the 1990 blockbuster earned $476 million worldwide, said he is “not completely allergic” to reprising the role. However, he noted that any sequel “would have to be just right.”
Original director Chris Columbus has previously advised against revisiting the franchise, telling Entertainment Tonight in August that the original was “a very special moment” that “should be left alone.” Neither Culkin nor Columbus were involved in ‘Home Alone 3’ (1997) or the 2002 television sequel. Disney’s 2021 reboot, ‘Home Sweet Home Alone’, was poorly received by critics.
