Hugh Bonneville has indicated that he is unlikely to reprise his role as Mr Brown in the Paddington film series, citing his age as a factor. The actor, who has played the character since the first movie in 2014, told Saga Magazine: 'I don’t think so. I really don’t. I’ve loved it, but I’m getting on a bit.'
Bonneville added: 'It’s a younger man’s job, but you can get other actors in and it will work just as well, because it’s all about the bear.' His comments come as a fourth Paddington film is in development to mark the 70th anniversary of the beloved character, with Studiocanal confirming the project last year.
The actor also ruled out a return to his role as Robert Crawley, the Earl of Grantham, in Downton Abbey, following last year's release of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. He said: 'I wouldn’t be surprised if they make some sort of spin-off, but no, our company has left the building.'
Reflecting on the end of the period drama, Bonneville remarked: 'The Grand Finale really was a farewell. As we came towards the end of filming, I would take a look around each set – let’s say the library – for the last time, so that I would be able to remember.' He expressed pride in the show's legacy, noting that it also led to his involvement in Paddington.
