Grantchester to end after series 11, series 10 returns in 2026

The long-running and cherished ITV drama Grantchester is set to return to screens for its tenth series, but fans should prepare for a bittersweet farewell. It has been confirmed that the show will conclude after its eleventh series, marking the end of an era for the popular programme.

A Fond Farewell Announced

Series 10 of Grantchester is scheduled to premiere on Wednesday, 7 January 2026. This run will be the penultimate chapter for the detective drama, which first captivated audiences in 2014. The news of the show's conclusion was shared by star and executive producer Robson Green, who announced via social media that filming for the final series had begun in the summer of 2025.

In an emotional post, Green reflected on his journey playing Detective Inspector Geordie Keating. He stated that being part of the final series was "one of the greatest honours and privileges" of his life, praising the cast and crew who had become like family. He described the moment as "bittersweet" but filled with gratitude for the memories and friendships forged over more than a decade of summer filming.

The Evolving Cast of Grantchester

Based on the novels by James Runcie, the show has seen several key cast changes throughout its run. Robson Green has been a constant presence since the beginning, originally starring alongside James Norton as vicar Sidney Chambers until 2019. Tom Brittney then took over as Reverend Will Davenport before passing the clerical baton to Rishi Nair, who now plays Reverend Alphy Kottaram.

For the upcoming series 10, viewers will see Geordie and Alphy's partnership continue to develop after they first teamed up in series nine. They will be joined by a host of returning fan favourites, including Al Weaver as Leonard Finch, Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs. C, and Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy Keating.

Creative Team's Final Bow

Series creator Daisy Coulam also released a statement, emphasising that at its core, Grantchester is a show about the power of friendship and love, something experienced both on and off screen. Polly Hill, ITV's Director of Drama, and commissioner Callum Dziedzic praised the team for creating a series with "enduring warmth, wit, and heart," calling the finale the end of a "golden chapter for ITV drama."

While an exact broadcast date for the concluding series 11 remains under wraps, it was confirmed that production took place in the summer of 2025. This gives loyal viewers two more full series to enjoy before saying a final goodbye to the inhabitants of the picturesque Cambridgeshire village.
