Coronation Street Tackles Male Suicide in Emotional Storyline

Coronation Street is set to address the issue of male suicide in a storyline that will see factory boss Aidan Connor take his own life. Producers have stated that the plot is designed to encourage those who hide their feelings of desperation to start a conversation about their mental health.

The soap's makers have worked closely with mental health charities, including Samaritans and Calm, to ensure the story is handled sensitively and realistically. The episode, which will air on 9 May, will not show any element of the suicide on screen.

Shayne Ward, who plays Aidan Connor, expressed his hope that viewers who recognise something of themselves in the character will realise they can and should talk about how they are feeling. He noted that many people have heard stories like Aidan's when it was too late, and wished they had spotted the signs.

Producer Katie Oakes emphasised the importance of the storyline, stating that the show wants to assure anyone feeling suicidal that there is always someone who wants to listen and support them. She added that no matter how bleak someone feels, there is always another way.

Male suicide is a significant issue in the UK, with more than three-quarters of suicides being by men, and it is the biggest killer of males under 45. The storyline aims to raise awareness and encourage open conversations about mental health.
