BBC Reaffirms Show's Future

This announcement follows the BBC's strong denial of rumours that the long-running series was facing the axe. The broadcaster moved quickly to reassure fans, confirming a robust future for the franchise.

In a statement, the BBC said, "The BBC would like to reassure fans that Call the Midwife will remain at the heart of the BBC for years to come." They outlined an exciting roadmap, which includes two Christmas specials, the new fifteenth series, a cinema-release film, and a World War II-era prequel series, all leading to a sixteenth series in due course.

The festive action kicks off with a two-part Christmas special, airing on Christmas Day at 8.15pm and on Boxing Day at 8.30pm. This special sees senior staff head to Hong Kong on a mercy mission, leaving the younger midwives to manage alone. The BBC teased that this experience leads Sister Julienne to embrace change, setting a new tone for Series 15.

The new series will tackle a range of medical and social issues, including premature birth, placenta previa, and kidney cancer, while continuing to reflect the shifting landscape of the early 1970s.
