Fans of period dramas have reason to celebrate as a celebrated adaptation is now available to stream for free in the UK. The BBC's legendary 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice, which brought Jane Austen's 1813 tale of romance, class divides, and snobbery in Regency England to television screens, proved an enormous hit and is hailed as the benchmark of literary adaptations.
The synopsis on BBC iPlayer reads: "There's great excitement for the Bennets when a young aristocrat makes an appearance. The spectacular adaptation that sparked Austen-mania. Starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle." Viewers were captivated by the on-screen chemistry between Ehle and Firth, who shot to fame thanks to his smouldering portrayal of Mr Darcy.
