BBC Unveils New Quiz Show 'Do You Know Your Place?' with Vernon Kay and Paul Gorton

The BBC has introduced a brand new quiz show titled Do You Know Your Place?, which premiered on Monday, 23 February. The programme is hosted by television personality Vernon Kay and co-presented by Paul Gorton, known for his role in The Traitors. This exciting series combines travel elements with studio-based games, offering a unique twist on traditional quiz formats.

Unexpected Role for Paul Gorton

In an exclusive revelation, Paul Gorton shared that his involvement in the show came about unexpectedly. Originally booked as a guest, he stepped into the co-presenter role at the last minute when the planned host for his segment withdrew. Gorton explained, "I was booked to be a guest on one of these early iterations and the host pulled out, because the host was going to be out with the celebs... whoever they booked decided to not show and said, 'Oh I can't do it now', so instead of finding someone, let's see if Paul wants to have a go." This spontaneous change led to a successful pilot, convincing producers to integrate his segments with Vernon Kay's hosting duties.

Show Format and Celebrity Participants

The series features Paul Gorton leading an 'unreliable' tour of various UK destinations, from Belfast to Wrexham, while Vernon Kay oversees in-studio games inspired by each location. Celebrity players compete to distinguish factual information from fiction, with points accumulated over five episodes. Notable guests include Nitin Ganatra from EastEnders, Reverend Kate Bottley, Gladiator Alex 'Apollo' Gray, Anneka Rice, Susan Calman, Owain Wyn Evans, and Max Fosh. The daily winner receives a souvenir from Paul's travels, and the overall weekly champion is awarded an 'I Know My Place' sweatshirt.

Production Insights and BBC Approval

Reflecting on the show's development, Gorton noted that the concept originated two years ago as a travel-based programme with celebrity involvement and integrated games. After the pilot, which involved Gorton and three celebrities, producers decided to blend his outdoor segments with Vernon Kay's studio hosting. Gorton described the process, "Luckily it all worked, it all clicked together. I did my bit which was all kind of the VTs, then Vernon's done his bit in kind of like a mock studio and they stitched it together." He expressed surprise at the BBC's swift commissioning, stating, "the BBC guys were just like 'Yep, we love it, we want it'", highlighting the rarity of such immediate approval in television production.
