Autumnwatch Returns to BBC Screens in Surprise Collaboration with The One Show

The BBC's beloved nature series Autumnwatch is making a surprise return to screens just three months after it was axed in a cost-cutting measure. The show, fronted by Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan and Gillian Burke, has joined forces with The One Show for a trio of films airing from Tuesday 24th to Thursday 26th October.

In April, viewers launched a petition after the BBC announced that Autumnwatch would not continue in 2023 and beyond, citing a need to focus resources on content with the 'highest impact'. The decision came amid financial pressures, with the BBC needing to save £285 million following a freeze on the licence fee.

The presenters will appear live from various locations across the UK, showcasing wildlife including horseshoe bats, the red deer rut in the New Forest, and tawny owls in Kielder Forest, Northumberland. Each segment will highlight seasonal changes in animal behaviour and conservation efforts.

Michaela Strachan, travelling from her home in South Africa to take part, said: 'Autumn marks a beautiful transition in nature's calendar. I'm delighted we can continue to bring this seasonal event to viewers across the UK.' BBC Specialist Factual boss Jack Bootle added: 'I'm delighted that we've been able to join forces with The One Show to bring back Autumnwatch for these three seasonal specials.'

The collaboration marks a brief revival for the programme, which had been cancelled after 17 years. Springwatch and Winterwatch continue to air, though Winterwatch has been reduced from two weeks to one.
