King Charles is officially celebrating his 77th birthday this weekend, and his wife, Queen Camilla, remains a steadfast presence by his side. The monarch's actual birthday was in November, but the official celebration takes place on Saturday, June 13, with Trooping the Colour, a tradition spanning over 260 years.
A Pillar of Strength During Turbulent Times
Charles's reign has been marked by significant challenges, including the loss of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 2022, his cancer diagnosis in 2024, and the decision to strip his brother, Andrew, of royal titles. Through it all, Camilla has been a constant source of support since their marriage in 2005.
Camilla's Calming Effect
Royal biographer Christopher Wilson, author of A Greater Love, described Camilla as a "calming force" for the King. He noted, "Her presence reassures him. Despite all the trappings of majesty, it's cold and lonely at the top, and it's easy to see the comfort she provides him."
Royal photographer Arthur Edwards added that Camilla brings levity to royal duties. "She never lost her common touch. She makes him laugh. When something triggers them, you see them just laughing together. They do things with such enthusiasm."
Body language expert Darren Stanton observed the couple's physical bond, stating, "They have the same passion for each other still to this day. During public events, Charles is often looking around and fidgeting when Camilla isn't by his side, which shows how dependent he is on her. But when they are together, we see this genuine laughter shared between them with engaged eye contact, and this shows how they are on the same page emotionally."
Trooping the Colour 2026
The Royal Family will gather for the grand procession on Saturday, June 13. Alongside the King and Queen, the Prince and Princess of Wales are expected to appear with their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Anne with Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and the Duke of Kent will also attend. The balcony lineup remains unchanged since 2023, King Charles's first as monarch.
Camilla's role in helping Charles relax and enjoy his reign has been widely acknowledged. Stanton remarked, "When he was a young Prince, we rarely saw him display a relaxed nature. Camilla brings that side out of him where he can be himself, let go and just enjoy his time as King."
