Following a dramatic week on Married At First Sight that culminated in an explosive dinner party, the experiment welcomed two new couples on Monday night, with intruder groom Joel Moses immediately causing controversy.
Shocking Wedding Vows and Bizarre Revelations
Joel Moses, 31, shocked his bride Juliette Chae, 27, with unconventional vows and an equally strange performance during their wedding reception. The ceremony featured several existing MAFS couples including Gia and Scott, Bec and Danny, Stella and Filip, and Mel and Luke, all of whom appeared less than impressed with Joel's cringeworthy jokes.
Despite initial pleasant banter where both admitted to feeling a connection, Joel threw a bizarre spanner in the works by revealing he had been married before. When a shocked Juliette asked if it was "kind of the same vibe marrying a stranger," Joel replied: "No, it was my teddy bear, not a human," before adding: "Shall we get married? I'm hungry."
Cringeworthy Vows and Awkward Moments
After Juliette delivered her traditional vows, Joel's turn proved full of uncomfortable jokes that had guests wincing. "My mother says I'm perfect, but I most certainly disagree," Joel told his new bride. "I've actually got many flaws – carpet, tiles, wood – you name it, baby."
He continued increasing the awkwardness factor with: "Who is this perfectly manicured, dapper, suave, sexy, unsophisticated, undomesticated, uncultured, once fat Uber driver turned model, who can't tell the difference between a bloody washing machine and a dryer."
Joel concluded his vows by warning Juliette he would be ridding her wardrobe of unsightly items. "I want to really know you. All your quirks, your dreams, your fears, your annoying habits, your questionable clothing items," he said. "Loose and baggy equals daggy. All Birkenstocks and Crocs must be incinerated immediately."
Reception Awkwardness and Mother's Cutting Remarks
The discomfort continued at the reception with Joel's speech featuring cheesy one-liners that apparently only he found amusing. "One thing about me is I have an insatiable appetite, not just for food but for life for love and of course my wife," he said, affecting a Borat accent on the word 'wife' before laughing maniacally to himself.
Joel described himself as "quite an eccentric... over the top kind of dude" and warned Juliette he was a "hygiene-obsessed, OCD neat freak" who would notice even the slightest thing out of place. He also revealed a proclivity to snort to clear a constantly blocked throat and severe hay fever symptoms.
Things deteriorated further when Joel's mother Sharyn, a psychologist, took the microphone and made cutting remarks about her son's weight loss journey. "From the very beginning, Joel danced to the beat of his own drum. He would rather starve himself which turned into the opposite problem as he got older and he turned into a gluttonous pig," she said.
Mother's Revelations and Teddy Bear Confessions
Sharyn revealed she "needed a whole other degree to try and understand my child" and described his close relationship with his childhood teddy bear. "He was always very close to me, and his childhood Teddy, and Joel would choose to stay at home and lie on the couch with his games, food and Teddy," she explained.
"Not much has changed today, he still has his Teddy and he still likes to lie on my lap and have me scratch his back." She then revealed Juliette would have to accept Joel's teddy sharing their marital bed: "As long as you're happy with having a 30-year-old teddy in the bed then I think you'll be all right."
Bride's Growing Frustration and Walkout
What began as a dream for Juliette appeared to transform into a nightmare, with her mood visibly shifting after the speeches. "I'm p***ed off," she told producers. "This is a vulnerable situation I put myself in for something I thought was going to be real. Who says s*** like that?"
"I'm here to find the love of my life and I kind of feel this whole thing has been a joke and a theatrical performance." As Joel attempted to explain he was joking with his speech, Juliette got up from the table and walked off, leaving Joel searching for his next punchline.
The dramatic episode leaves viewers questioning whether this unconventional pairing can survive beyond the initial wedding ceremony, with Juliette's visible frustration suggesting significant challenges ahead for the newlyweds.
