While they may not have been the most dramatic couple on Married At First Sight, behind the scenes, Sam Stanton and Chris Robinson's relationship was quietly deteriorating long before audiences witnessed its collapse. What appeared on screen as a relatively stable pairing was, in reality, a slow-burning breakdown fueled by persistent communication failures, defensive behavior, and a growing emotional distance between the two grooms.
Unseen Footage Reveals Deep Hurt
Both men have now spoken candidly about their experience, revealing a partnership that struggled to recover once initial cracks began to show. In an interview with Daily Mail, Sam described watching the series back as both "frustrating and confronting," admitting that one particular unseen moment left him profoundly wounded.
"But the biggest thing sitting with me now is the unseen footage… I'm pretty f***ing hurt by it," Sam revealed.
The contentious footage showed Chris making comments about Sam's financial situation and living arrangements—claims that Sam insists are not only hurtful but completely inaccurate.
"I never once used a coupon… I actually spent more money than him," Sam countered. "I lived with my best friend - not in a share house like he made it out."
Chris has since addressed the moment, acknowledging that the remark was made impulsively during a heated exchange.
"It was just a silly, b**chy comment," he admitted.
Communication Breakdown From The Beginning
For Sam, however, the issue extended far beyond a single offhand comment. Although the pair seemed to be getting along during the early stages of the experiment, Sam revealed that problems were present from the very beginning.
"I felt like I was being spoken over quite a lot," he explained. "If you look back at our first commitment ceremony, he talks the whole time."
Despite raising his concerns early on, Sam said the dynamic persisted, leaving him feeling increasingly silenced and invalidated.
"The first time I tried to speak up, it just blew up," he recalled. "He couldn't see my side because he was so worried about protecting his image."
Chris has acknowledged his struggles in those moments, confessing that confrontation often triggered a defensive response.
"I don't like that type of confrontation… it makes me get really defensive," he said.
Tensions Reach Breaking Point
The situation escalated dramatically during a tense dinner party, where their private issues were brought into the public spotlight before the entire group. Chris described the experience as "awful" and maintained that he believed the matter had already been resolved privately.
"I did apologise in the apartments and thought we could move forward," he stated.
For Sam, however, the core problem remained unaddressed, and bringing it up publicly was about finally being heard. This fundamental difference in approach marked a significant turning point, with conflicts continuing to resurface rather than being resolved.
External Pressures Compound Problems
Chris also revealed that he was dealing with mounting personal pressures during filming, including significant stress from outside the experiment.
"I had so much going on… the pressure was building up," he explained. "I wasn't communicating great and I wasn't the best version of myself."
He admitted that he "wished" he had handled certain situations differently and has since taken steps to work on personal growth and self-improvement.
For Sam, the relationship underwent a decisive shift during the commitment ceremony when Chris chose to write "leave."
"I thought we were both going to write stay and work on things," Sam said. "But as soon as I saw him write leave… I was like, what am I doing here?"
Emotional Connection Fades Away
From that moment onward, Sam said the emotional connection between them began to dissipate rapidly. By the time homestays arrived, he felt the relationship had lost all momentum. Although the pair managed to maintain civility, Sam believed genuine effort to repair their bond was lacking.
"It killed any emotion I had left in the relationship," he confessed.
One incident in particular stood out as emblematic of their disconnect.
"He left me at the farm… no text, no note, nothing," Sam recalled. "That's when it became clear I wasn't his priority."
Chris, meanwhile, said he had hoped to use the homestay period as an opportunity to show Sam his life outside the experiment.
"I was excited to get to the farm and show him my world," he said.
But by that stage, the emotional disconnect between them had already taken firm hold.
A Relationship That Slowly Slipped Away
Rather than collapsing in one explosive moment, Sam and Chris's relationship deteriorated through a series of unresolved issues:
- Persistent communication failures
- Differing expectations and approaches to conflict
- An inability to find common ground
- Growing emotional distance
Chris now admits he has "growing to do" and has been working on himself since filming concluded.
"I want to be a better person… and take accountability," he stated.
For Sam, however, the breakdown was evident long before the final weeks of the experiment played out on screen. Ultimately, this wasn't a relationship that ended suddenly or dramatically—it was one that slowly, quietly slipped away through accumulated misunderstandings and unmet needs.
