May Bank Holiday Train Disruption: London Stations Closed
May Bank Holiday Train Disruption: London Stations Closed

Britons planning to travel by train over the upcoming May Bank Holiday weekend could face significant disruption. Two major London stations — Charing Cross and Waterloo East — will be closed from Saturday to Monday (May 2 to 4) due to essential engineering works.

Engineering Works Across the Network

The line upgrade work is set to take place on parts of the railway in south London, Sussex and Kent. Network Rail has urged customers to check before they travel, although the rail company emphasises that most trains will continue as normal in Kent and Sussex.

Trains that usually run from Charing Cross will be diverted to London Victoria or London Cannon Street, except on Sunday when the latter station will be closed. During this diversion, track will be replaced at Hither Green and Grove Park, while the Lewisham area will receive signal upgrades. A new footbridge is also being installed at Hither Green.

Further Disruptions on Sunday

More disruption will continue on Sunday, with trains between Charing Cross and Dover Priory via Tonbridge only operating between London Victoria and Headcorn. Those heading from Ashford will find the hourly train diverted to run via Maidstone East. Accessible replacement bus services will run between Headcorn and Ashford International, stopping at Pluckley.

Elsewhere on the line, engineering work is scheduled from Saturday to Monday between London Victoria and Balham. Track is being replaced on platforms 16 and 17 of Clapham Junction, so a reduced train service will operate between London Victoria and Clapham Junction/East Croydon. There will also be no Southern trains between Clapham Junction and Watford Junction due to work in north London.

Disruption Across Sussex

Further disruption will continue on Sunday between Three Bridges and Lewes/Brighton, where rail replacement buses will be operating. Anyone wanting to travel between Brighton and Gatwick Airport or London is advised to use a diverted Southern train service that will run via Horsham and Littlehampton.

There will also be no Southern trains between Balham and Sutton via Mitcham Junction. Travellers will have to take replacement buses that operate between Sutton Common and Sutton, calling at Mitcham Eastfields, Mitcham Junction, Hackbridge and Carshalton.

Statements from Rail Officials

David Davidson, chief operating officer for the South Eastern Railway, explained that bank holidays are often some of the 'least busy times' for work to be done. He said: 'This work on our railway will deliver more reliable journeys, improve performance and accessibility, and help modernise critical railway infrastructure. There is no "right way" to do major work on our railway, but bank holidays are still among the least busy times for us in terms of passenger numbers and freight services. Those extra days with fewer customers give us an opportunity to do longer projects that we couldn't do in a normal two-day weekend or overnight. While most of our railway is open as usual over the bank holidays this May, there are some exceptions, and I'd advise everyone to plan ahead and check before they travel.'

Jenny Saunders, Southern's customer service director, added: 'With the forecast for the bank holiday weekend looking promising, it's a great opportunity to discover somewhere new by train. Engineers will also be making reliability improvements to the tracks, which will affect a small number of our services over the long weekend, particularly those between London Victoria and London Bridge and between Brighton and Three Bridges on Sunday. We've arranged rail replacement buses and ticket acceptance to keep people moving, and our staff will be out to help passengers. Take a look on the Southern or Thameslink website to plan your journey, and find inspiration on where to visit over the weekend.'
