Channel 4 Viewers Rally for Revival of Axed Reality Series The Circle
Devotees of reality television are passionately appealing to Channel 4 executives to resurrect what they deem the "best show ever," five years after its abrupt cancellation. The Circle, a pioneering social experiment that captivated audiences, was discontinued in 2021, leaving a void that fans are now desperate to fill.
The Innovative Format of The Circle
The Circle stood out as a groundbreaking reality gameshow where contestants inhabited isolated apartments, interacting solely via a custom social media platform. Participants had the freedom to adopt any identity, often engaging in "catfishing" tactics to boost their popularity and compete for a grand prize of up to £100,000.
The inaugural season in 2018 was clinched by Alex Hobern, a 26-year-old internet comedian who masqueraded as a 25-year-old woman named Kate, using photographs of his actual girlfriend, Millie. Subsequent victories included Paddy Smyth, who played authentically as himself, and Natalya Platonova, who assumed the persona of "Felix," a 29-year-old paratrooper. The sole celebrity edition saw Lady Leshurr triumph by disguising herself as Big Narstie.
Narration was provided by Sophie Willan, with hosting duties initially handled by Maya Jama and Alice Levine before Emma Willis took over from the second season onwards, guiding viewers through the twists and turns of the competition.
Cancellation and Fan Backlash
Channel 4 announced the cancellation of the UK version of The Circle in May 2021, following three civilian seasons. A spokesperson for the broadcaster praised the show as a "huge hit for young audiences" and highlighted its role in fostering international success. However, they explained the decision was part of a strategy to introduce fresh ideas and concepts to the channel's lineup.
In recent times, a growing chorus of fans has taken to social media to lobby for the show's return, positioning it as a potential competitor to the BBC's acclaimed gameshow, The Traitors. One enthusiast posted on X, "Another month, another tweet from super tv asking Channel 4 to just BRING BACK THE CIRCLE." Another echoed, "Why did they get rid of it, after the Traitors it's my favourite reality TV show. Quite relevant in this day and age too."
Sentiments of longing were widespread, with a third fan declaring, "It's not a want, it's a need. I miss that show with my whole heart," and others simply pleading, "Give us this back!" A fifth supporter argued, "If @Channel4 want a rival to The Traitors, this is it!" while another affirmed, "This is my fav reality show of all time! I'd love to see it return!"
Enduring Praise and Legacy
Over the years, The Circle has garnered high acclaim from viewers, with one IMDb user noting, "I rarely watch reality TV but was very easily hooked by this show." Another added, "LOVED IT! First reality show I watched from start to end," and a third shared, "I was shocked that I loved it! Thought I would hate this show, put it on for background noise on a snow day stuck inside. Ended up hooked after the first episode, watched the whole season in one sitting, and found myself smiling from ear to ear at the end when they announced the winner."
A fourth viewer reflected on the show's psychological depth, commenting, "If you're getting bored with the typical reality TV formats of free-to-air, this one gets you thinking as it uncovers the psychology of who we think we are, how we post, when we filter image, and what emojis to use to deliver the persona we are trying to create online."
Despite its cancellation, The Circle remains accessible for streaming on Channel 4, allowing new and existing fans to revisit its unique blend of strategy and social commentary. As calls for its revival intensify, the future of this beloved series hangs in the balance, with audiences hopeful for a comeback that could redefine reality television once more.
