Former New York City mayor Eric Adams has faced widespread mockery online after advising residents to "Netflix and chill" as a historic snowstorm approaches. The comment, made on X, urged New Yorkers to prepare for the blizzard but included the viral euphemism for sex.
Adams, who dropped out of the 2025 mayoral race weeks before the election, passed the torch to Zohran Mamdani on 1 January after serving a single term. His tweet read: "A serious snowstorm is headed our way. Get prepared now. Check on your elderly neighbours. Stock up. Charge up. And plan to Netflix and chill for a few days. On the bright side, more snow means more future New Yorkers."
The post drew sharp reactions from former constituents, with one responding: "Sorry man can't be home reproducing because i still have to go to work bc the cost of living is egregious thanks tho." Another wrote: "you already used this line last year." Many reminded Adams he was no longer mayor, with one saying: "You were a horrible mayor. So plz stop pretending you're still the mayor."
Hours after Adams's tweet, Mayor Mamdani declared a local state of emergency as the region braced for its first dangerous blizzard in over a decade. Non-essential vehicles were ordered off streets from 9pm Sunday to midday Monday, with roads, bridges and tunnels closed. Subways will remain running, but Long Island Rail Road services will shut Sunday evening. Schools were given a snow day, and warming centres were opened citywide.
Mamdani said: "The safety of New Yorkers is my top priority. As this blizzard moves in, our administration is mobilising every tool at our disposal, around the clock, to keep our neighbours safe." The response to Adams's tweet highlighted public frustration with his tone and relevance after leaving office.
