Pop Star Dean Lewis Takes Legal Action Over 'Manipulated' Abuse Allegations

International pop sensation Dean Lewis has initiated legal proceedings against a Dutch woman he briefly dated, accusing her of manipulating explicit text messages to falsely depict him as violent and abusive. The Sydney-born singer-songwriter, known for hits like "Waves," alleges that 25-year-old Sanne van Ooijen selectively edited their private communications to create a misleading narrative of non-consensual behavior.

Controversial TikTok Video Sparks Legal Battle

In December last year, Ms van Ooijen posted a TikTok video featuring an image of what she claimed was her badly bruised buttock, alongside selected text messages from conversations with the 38-year-old musician. The video suggested Lewis had inflicted the injuries when she refused to call him her "God," overlaying messages including one where Lewis stated, "U need to be dominated." However, the video crucially omitted Ms van Ooijen's immediate response: "I do. Dominate me."

Lewis's legal team has conducted an extensive review of thousands of WhatsApp messages exchanged between their client and Ms van Ooijen, finding no evidence supporting her claim that he demanded to be called "God." Instead, the correspondence reveals detailed discussions about consensual sexual roleplay, with Ms van Ooijen repeatedly expressing enthusiasm for dominance and spanking scenarios.

Evidence of Consensual Communications

Further undermining the abuse allegations, messages from May 2024—five months after the TikTok video texts—show Ms van Ooijen addressing Lewis as "Daddyyy" in another sexually charged exchange. She also sent a photograph of herself in activewear with the accompanying text: "And I want you to spank my ass like you did in Amsterdam."

Lewis's lawyers argue these communications demonstrate Ms van Ooijen's consistent consent and enthusiasm for the activities she later portrayed as abusive. They further allege she has previously admitted to making false allegations about Lewis and apologized for this conduct.

Coordinated Legal Response to Online Campaign

The legal action forms part of Lewis's broader response to what he describes as a sustained online campaign of false criminal allegations involving women and underage girls. The musician has engaged lawyers across four countries—Australia, the UK, the US, and the Netherlands—who have sent legal letters to four women in a coordinated effort to address the claims.

Despite the controversy, Lewis's professional success continues unabated. Over the past fifteen months, he has sold out major venues on three continents, including Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena, London's OVO Arena Wembley, and Sydney's TikTok Entertainment Centre.

Lewis's Public Response and Personal Accountability

In a social media statement last year when the allegations first emerged, Lewis acknowledged being "flirty with adult women of all different ages" but vehemently denied any illegal conduct. "Occasionally, that flirting leads to consensual intimate encounters that I thought were private," he posted on Instagram.

A source close to Lewis told the Daily Mail that "selectively edited material and unverified allegations" had been "weaponised at scale" against the award-winning artist. While acknowledging Lewis hasn't "always behaved perfectly in aspects of his personal life," the source emphasized he draws "a very firm line in the sand at criminal allegations of non-consensual or underage conduct."

Background of the Relationship

Ms van Ooijen, who resides in Lelystad near Amsterdam, dated Lewis for several weeks in mid-2023 while he was touring Europe. According to Lewis, they maintained a "friends with benefits" arrangement with regular communication that sometimes included sexual fantasy discussions. Correspondence shows Ms van Ooijen describing herself as Lewis's "best friend" and "the love of his life," though he insists she was never his girlfriend.

Lewis states he terminated contact on December 10 last year, after which Ms van Ooijen began posting abuse allegations online. Her December 19 TikTok video featuring the bruised image was followed by an Instagram post claiming the injuries resulted from being hit "because i didn't do what he wanted me to do."

Allegations Escalate Through Social Media

The claims gained wider circulation when 19-year-old British TikTok influencer Evie Smith reposted them to her 90,000 followers. Ms Smith, previously one of Lewis's most influential fans, wrote: "Your favorite artist hits girls until they call him god... how are people defending this behavior." She also claimed Ms van Ooijen wasn't "the only one with bruises from him."

In October, Ms Smith published a TikTok clip of what Lewis alleges were selectively edited private conversations, viewed 12 million times. The allegations subsequently escalated to include claims of sexual assault and grooming underage girls. Ms Smith has since received a legal concerns notice from Lewis's lawyers, accusing her of defaming him as a sexual predator.

Legal Proceedings and Demands

Lewis's lawyers first contacted Ms van Ooijen on December 20, accusing her of publishing "false, misleading and seriously defamatory" material. Their demands included ceasing publication of such content and removing all posts referencing Lewis. "The publications and conduct complained of are not accidental or inadvertent," they wrote. "They form part of a deliberate course of action directed at damaging Mr Lewis's reputation, personal relationships and professional standing."

The legal team noted the seriousness was compounded by Ms van Ooijen's alleged previous admissions of making false allegations about Lewis. Despite warnings, Lewis alleges she continued encouraging third parties to repeat false claims, prompting him to commence legal action in the Netherlands.

Lewis's Personal Reflection and Commitment to Change

Following the publication of Ms Smith's TikTok video, several women came forward claiming Lewis had made them uncomfortable with his advances. Four days later, Lewis addressed the allegations on Instagram, acknowledging the "embarrassing details of intimate private conversations" while emphasizing none involved illegal conduct.

"From the bottom of my heart, I want to sincerely apologise to those I've hurt," he stated. "I also need to apologise to my family and fans who I've gravely disappointed." Lewis announced he was enrolling in "intense therapy to make better choices and dramatically shift my approach to dating and relationships," expressing hope to "re-earn the trust of those I've hurt."

Ms van Ooijen has been contacted for comment regarding the legal action. Ms Smith, currently understood to be in South America, has told the Daily Mail she wants "nothing to do" with any story about her conduct.
