During his performance at Brixton Academy in London, pop sensation Sombr abruptly stopped his show to publicly criticise the venue's security team after they apparently failed to notice a fan who had fainted in the crowd.
Concert Interrupted by Safety Concerns
The Grammy-nominated US singer, whose real name is Shane Michael Boose, was performing the third and final night of his residency at the iconic London venue on Monday, 9 March 2026. Midway through a rendition of his hit song "Back to Friends," Sombr halted the performance to address the concerning situation.
"Guys, there's someone passed out over here," the 20-year-old artist told security personnel, as captured in footage that quickly circulated across social media platforms. He continued with a stern rebuke: "This is the most poorly managed venue I've ever played at in my life. You guys need to pay attention. It's insane. Safety comes first."
Venue's Troubled History with Crowd Safety
The incident carries particular weight given Brixton Academy's tragic past. In December 2022, a crowd crush outside a sold-out concert by Afrobeats artist Asake resulted in the deaths of two individuals: Rebecca Ikumelo, a 33-year-old mother of two, and 23-year-old security guard Gaby Hutchinson.
Following that tragedy, Lambeth Council suspended the venue's licence for three months, later extending the suspension due to what was described as "shambolic" security procedures. The venue was required to meet 77 extensive new conditions designed to enhance public safety before it could reopen in April 2024.
Academy Music Group (AMG), which owns Brixton Academy, expressed devastation over the 2022 events and committed to ensuring such a tragedy would never be repeated. In a statement following the licence restoration, AMG said: "We continue to be devastated by the events of [December 2022]. Our heartfelt condolences remain with the family and friends of Rebecca Ikumelo and Gaby Hutchinson."
Artist's Response and Ongoing Tour
Sombr did not directly address the incident after the show concluded. Instead, he posted to social media: "London night three. I love you so much. Thanks for an unforgettable past three nights. I'll be back London."
The Independent has contacted both Brixton Academy and Sombr's representative for comment regarding the recent incident.
Sombr rose to prominence with his 2025 debut album I Barely Know Her, along with viral singles including "12 to 12" and "Undressed." He received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist at the 2026 ceremony, though the award ultimately went to British star Olivia Dean.
The artist continues his UK tour this week with scheduled performances in Manchester and Glasgow, followed by appearances at the Reading and Leeds festivals this summer.
