James Martin made an emotional plea to viewers of his ITV cooking show on Saturday, urging them to buy British lamb to support struggling farmers. The chef, hosting 'James Martin's Saturday Morning', paused mid-recipe to deliver the heartfelt message.
While preparing a lamb shank tagine, Martin said: 'Please, please as a nation can we just buy stuff from this country. We've got amazing produce in this country. Buy British, because this stuff is just the best in the world.' He highlighted that it is prime season for lamb and that farmers need help.
Martin grew increasingly passionate as he described the hard work farmers put into maintaining dry stone walls in the Lake District to protect sheep. 'When you think about what they get for the end product, it's such little money for the amount of work that they put into it,' he added.
The chef, who had slow-cooked the lamb for 12 hours overnight, described the dish as a 'pot of pleasure' and suggested adding almonds and pistachios to elevate it. He reiterated his plea, calling British lamb 'one of the true, true delights' and urging viewers to buy it while in season.
