Guy Pratt, one of the world's most esteemed bass players, has performed alongside iconic acts like Pink Floyd, Roxy Music, and Madonna throughout his illustrious career. However, after decades commanding global stages, the 64-year-old British musician has developed a "yen" for "more genteel pursuits," leading him to take up bell-ringing at his local church.
A New Chapter in Sussex
Pratt, who joined Pink Floyd in the 1980s following Roger Waters' departure, now rings the bells at the historic 14th-century St Andrew's Church in the picturesque village of Alfriston, East Sussex. This surprising shift came during a quiet period last year while he was writing his memoirs, prompting him to explore campanology—the art of bell-ringing.
Embracing Village Life
In the latest edition of The Oldie magazine, Pratt reflected on this transition, noting that many veteran rockers eventually gravitate toward calmer hobbies. "I'm usually away a couple of months or so a year on tour, but last year there was nothing on offer and I had a book to write," he explained. This lull inspired him to fully immerse himself in village life for the first time, embarking on bell-ringing lessons with the local rector.
Pratt admitted that the skill required for bell-ringing proved more complex than anticipated. "There is more to bell-ringing than I'd thought. Pretty much none of my musical knowledge seemed to be of any use," he said, highlighting the unique challenges of this ancient tradition.
Overcoming Setbacks
Just as he was preparing for his inaugural bell-ringing performance, a shoulder injury temporarily sidelined him. However, Pratt remains undeterred, stating, "I am just about to return." He humorously compared his new audience to his past gigs, remarking, "Yes, I'm performing to a smaller and less animated audience than in the past."
Despite the quieter setting, Pratt expressed enthusiasm for his newfound passion. "Still, I hope I'll be ringing the changes with gusto for many years to come," he added, signaling a heartfelt commitment to this serene pursuit.
