BBC Scraps Football Focus After 52 Years, Shifts to Digital Content
BBC Ends Football Focus After 52 Years

The BBC has blown the final whistle on Football Focus, the iconic Saturday lunchtime programme that has been a staple of British football coverage for 52 years. The show, which has been presented by former England international Alex Scott since 2021, will go off air this summer as the broadcaster shifts its focus to digital content.

End of an Era

Football Focus has been a fixture on BBC One since 1974, when Bob Wilson became its first host. The programme offered a mix of interviews, features, and behind-the-scenes footage from the world of football, setting the tone for the weekend's matches. However, changing media consumption habits, with fans increasingly turning to clips and livestreams, have led to a decline in viewership.

The BBC's director of sport, Alex Kay-Jelski, said the decision was made after “extensive consideration” and was not driven by cost-cutting, despite the corporation facing job losses. “Football Focus has been a hugely important programme in the history of BBC Sport and has played a key role in telling the stories of the game for generations of viewers,” he said. “This decision reflects the continued shift in how audiences engage with football and our commitment to evolving how we deliver content to reach fans wherever they are.”

Digital Future

To replace the show, the BBC has announced an increase in digital sports content, including new programmes made directly for YouTube as part of a partnership with the platform. Kay-Jelski teased “a very exciting new project” that could be part of this offering.

Alex Scott will remain a key figure at the BBC, covering the summer's World Cup and the Sports Personality of the Year Awards. “Alex will continue to be a big part of our sports coverage,” Kay-Jelski said.

Schedule Changes

In the TV schedules, Football Focus will be replaced by The Football Interview, a series currently hosted by Kelly Somers and shown after Match of the Day on Saturday nights. Additionally, Final Score with Jason Mohammad will start earlier on BBC One at 3:45pm on Saturdays.

The move underscores the BBC's strategy to adapt to the digital age, where passionate and partisan voices from former professionals and fan influencers have gained traction over traditional journalistic approaches.
