Why Celebrities Fall for Their Bodyguards: The Psychology Behind the Romance
Why Celebrities Fall for Their Bodyguards

It is a romantic tale that raised a generation of women, with girls across the world swept up by the love story in The Bodyguard. The 1992 blockbuster starred Whitney Houston as singer Rachel Marron, who falls in love with her devoted bodyguard Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner) after he is assigned to protect her from a deranged stalker. Yet in recent years, the story has played out in real life, with Kim Kardashian, Myleene Klass, and Heidi Klum among the stars who have fallen for the charms of their hunky protectors.

More often than not, female powerhouses are usually closely followed by their towering protectors, whether traveling with them around the world or dodging through crowds. It is no wonder celebrities fall for their bodyguards, having been in their proximity for hours on end, acting as a human shield. Holly Valance is the latest star to get romantically involved with her former bodyguard Grant Gale, 34.

Why Do So Many A-List Women Fall for Their Bodyguards?

Women across the world were swept up by the love story in The Bodyguard, and in recent years, the story has played out in real life. Dating and relationship coach expert Kate Mansfield weighed in on the attraction, telling the Daily Mail: 'Holly Valance is just the latest in a long line of powerful women to fall for the man hired to protect her. Heidi Klum did it, Kim Kardashian did it, so what is going on?'

'It is all about safety. Safety is the most undervalued ingredient in modern dating. These women live in tightly controlled, high-pressure worlds where everyone wants something from them. The bodyguard is the one person whose entire job is to put her first. She confuses that professional devotion with genuine love. It feels real because, in that bubble, it is real.'

'Then there is the power flip. These women are the boss in every room they walk into. Wealthy, successful, in charge. The bodyguard represents something they rarely experience: raw, physical, traditional masculinity. But here is why it almost always falls apart. Once the crisis bubble bursts, the lifestyle gap becomes impossible to ignore. The power dynamic shifts back. What felt like protection starts to feel like an imbalance. Resentment builds on both sides.'

'The lesson is not just for celebrities. Any successful woman who keeps falling for the wrong man needs to ask herself whether she is chasing chemistry or genuine connection. The two are not the same thing. Real love is built on friendship, shared values, and emotional safety. Not on who happens to be standing closest when life gets overwhelming.'

Holly Valance and Grant Gale

Holly Valance is the latest star to get romantically involved with her former bodyguard Grant Gale, 34, following her divorce from her billionaire husband Nick Candy. The Daily Mail revealed that Holly's new flame used to work as a bodyguard at the £270 million family home in Chelsea that she shared with her ex-husband. Following her split from property tycoon husband Nick Candy in June last year after 13 years of marriage, Holly was initially linked to right-wing political figure Tommy Robinson. Yet Holly put rumours of a relationship with Tommy to bed when she was pictured kissing her new flame over the weekend.

It emerged last week that Providence House, Nick's mansion in Chelsea, has been bought by trading firm boss Suneil Setiya for around £270 million in one of the world's most expensive property sales. It is understood Grant was part of a security team that protected Nick, Holly, and their two children. Grant, from Newport, South Wales, is a former soldier and enthusiast for combat sports.

In the new images, the pair enjoyed a coffee and a chat on a bench in a London park last week. Wearing dark sunglasses and dressed casually in black leggings, a black top, and £300 Nike trainers, Holly smiled as Grant, dressed in blue jeans and a white and green top, stretched his arm around her back. She accepted his offer of his black denim jacket to keep her warm. He wrapped it around her as they stood up, and she put her hands on his cheeks and reached up for a kiss before they ambled off.

The former soldier is listed as director of a firm named Pretty Rifle Ltd, based in Northern Ireland, which is also run by 47-year-old Kenneth Joseph O'Hare. According to Companies House, the business is described as a 'wholesale of clothing and footwear'. It has not yet filed accounts. Meanwhile, a picture on Instagram appears to show Gale carrying a gun while wearing a yellow t-shirt which reads: 'Spartan'. His Instagram account @grantiogalio, as well as his Facebook account, have since been deleted.

Myleene Klass and Graham Quinn

Myleene Klass is among the stars who has fallen for the charms of their hunky protectors. Myleene, 48, started dating bodyguard Graham Quinn, 52, in 2001, who worked as security for her band Hear'Say. Graham also previously worked as a tour manager for JLS. The couple went on to welcome daughters Ava, 18, and Hero, 14, and tied the knot in 2011 after a decade together – only to separate six months later.

The long-feuding exes have since endured a bitter split, with Graham previously accusing Myleene of 'bullying and abuse'. In the years that followed, Graham – who is the brother of Keith Duffy's wife Lisa – retreated from the limelight as he attempted to rebuild his life in Ibiza. Myleene made headlines in July 2025 by claiming her and Graham's breakup was because she caught him cheating on her with another, unnamed celebrity, which sent social media into a frenzy with fans trying to work out the guilty party.

Several female celebrities have been accused of being the culprit after Myleene teased that they are someone with a 'family brand'. Speaking on Paul Brunson's podcast, Myleene said: 'I walked in on him with a famous person on my birthday on a balcony. I have made peace with that situation now but for a long time it was very difficult to see their life, not that I would wish that on a family, I don't know I feel conflicted but my life literally broke apart very, very publicly and their life they have continued to build a family brand on it.'

Graham's last X post was a lengthy message directed at Myleene, in which he accused her of 'bullying' and 'abuse' in a sensational online statement. The rant was sparked by a 2007 interview Myleene gave to the Daily Mail, in which she discussed his past drug offences. In the chat, Myleene mused: 'Before we even considered having a relationship, he was very upfront with me about what he had done. He was young and he got caught up in the wrong crowd. I was shocked but I also respected his honesty. He was haunted by it every day of his life and he still talks about it now.'

After the interview resurfaced in 2020, Graham broke his silence on their split to attack the musician, branding her 'nasty' and 'vindictive' and accusing her of playing 'childish games'. Having previously maintained an eight-year public silence on their relationship, he posted the essay on his public profile berating his ex-wife and denying longstanding allegations that he left her cash-strapped to enjoy a bachelor lifestyle. He wrote: 'So after eight years now of being separated... I've reached the end of my limit of abuse and bullying by Myleene Klass. For eight years you have spoken out quote after quote in all your interviews, making money from it and promoting your products and career etc.' He added that the breakdown of the couple's relationship 'should have never been in the public eye'.

Graham added he was perplexed as to why she continued to berate him despite the fact she was in a new, happy, relationship with Simon Motson. He wrote: '[It] must be very sad for your new partner — that the focus is still on the past? Everyone that knows me, knows that I'm an extremely private and loyal person. So please spare me the poor little victim stories.... to paint me as this horrible person - As for money or cars or houses, I've never taken a penny of your money or anything for that matter. I gave you the easiest divorce.'

Addressing his drug offences, Graham added he was 'extremely proud' to have turned his life around and had 'worked hard to put it right', mentioning he had worked with a drugs charity to raise awareness about the dangers of using them. He also noted that he loved his children 'unconditionally' and advised her to 'put them first'. 'You might have stopped me seeing them all this time but the years are going fast and they will be old enough soon to come and find me and see just how much I adore them and always have,' he wrote. 'I still won't allow myself to ever stoop that low to ever say anything bad about you as I'm not that type of person and my focus will never change, it's always been about Ava and Hero who I absolutely adore and love unconditionally. You can't ever break that. So please put them first, stop your childish games and wasting your time being nasty and vindictive all these years later and enjoy being a new mum and focus on your new partner, not an ex of over eight years.'

Kim Kardashian and Shengo Deane

Kim Kardashian was famously caught on camera having a fling with her Australian bodyguard Shengo Deane prior to her marrying Kanye West. Back in 2011, Shengo jumped into bed with Kim during an episode of Kourtney And Kim Take New York. The socialite was seen locked in an embrace with her former bodyguard, before sleeping with him in her bedroom. The next morning the couple snuggled underneath Kim's white sheets and kissed on camera before Sydney-based Shengo had to perform the 'walk of shame' out of her New York apartment. The pair, who originally met while Kim was visiting Sydney in 2010, organised to meet up in the Big Apple after Shengo sent Kim an email saying hello. At the time, Kim described him as: 'Tall, dark and has the sexiest Australian accent.'

Heidi Klum and Martin Kristen

After splitting from her ex-husband Seal in 2012, Heidi found solace in the arms of her bodyguard Martin Kristen just a few months later. Their professional relationship soon turned into a romance after Martin provided support during her divorce. It was reported that the pair split suddenly in January 2014 and stopped being her bodyguard. '[Martin]'s a great man and recently we just got to know each other from a completely different side,' Heidi said as per People at the time. 'He's been with our family for the last four years. He's cared for our four children and helped us tremendously. I trust him with my children's life.'

Defending that there was zero crossover with Seal and Martin, Heidi added: 'Yes, he has a very unique choice of words. I'm used to them. I don't love that. Obviously, it's not true. I never looked at another man while I was with him. And it's hard when you think that he thinks that. He was hurt. When we separated, he moved on and so have I. And it's very hard when you start seeing somebody again – it's hard when everyone is watching you. It's almost like you can't have a real proper chance in a way.'

Madonna and Jim Albright

The queen of pop had a relationship with her one-time bodyguard Jim Albright back in the nineties. 'I am feeling a bit cast out of the list of priorities in the Albright family,' she confessed at the time. 'But then it's my nature to be jealous and insecure when the man in my life doesn't come running when I call for him.' The reported three-year and stormy fling began when he was hired as her bodyguard in 1991. Jim allegedly told Andrew Norton in his 2001 biography that he had a 'hot and heavy' affair with the songstress at the beginning of 1991. 'It was like I was making a pact with the devil,' Jim told Andrew of what it was like falling in love with Madonna. Their intense romance involved endless phone calls and accusations of infidelity on both ends before it ended in 1994. Jim allegedly went on to sell letters and faxes that he received from the singer in 2009.
