The Origin of Tom's Famous Vocabulary
Celebrity personality Tom Read Wilson has captivated audiences with his unmistakably camp demeanour and remarkably sophisticated speaking style. The Celebs Go Dating star recently found himself explaining the origins of his impressive vocabulary to fellow campmate Aitch during their time together in the jungle.
When questioned about where he acquires his distinctive 'lingo', Wilson credited his 'wonderful dad' for his linguistic flair. He elaborated: 'He was an English teacher and he made it into stories all the time.... I'm not a poet at all but I love the lyricism of it all.'
The Family Secret Revealed
While Tom openly discussed his father's profession as an English teacher, he initially omitted a rather significant detail about how his parents actually met. The truth emerged during a 2024 appearance on 8 Out Of 10 Cats, where Tom disclosed a family story that many would consider scandalous by modern standards.
Tom revealed that his father, Crispin Read Wilson, entered into a relationship with an 18-year-old pupil who would later become Tom's mother, Juliette Cheeseman. The situation was complicated by the fact that Tom's maternal grandfather also taught at the same school.
'My maternal grandfather taught at the same school and sometimes the eldest girls of the faculty would date the youngest teachers,' Tom explained to hosts Jimmy Carr and Rob Beckett.
Shocking Age Gap Details
A stunned Rob Beckett immediately interjected: 'So your dad was a teacher there and your mum was a child there?' Tom quickly clarified: 'Well she was 18, coming of age. He was 16 years her senior.'
Host Jimmy Carr then spelled out the mathematics for everyone: 'He was 34 and she was 18.' Tom simply nodded in agreement, adding somewhat surprisingly: 'Yes. I never really thought about it.'
The celebrity's parents have since separated, with his father remarrying. Tom previously commented: 'I'm very close to my parents, but sadly they are now separated and my dad has remarried. My mum is a French teacher and a wonderful, zesty, rather naughty character.'
Voice Controversy and Family Support
Earlier this week, Tom's mother Juliette Cheeseman arrived at an Australian airport and shared her thoughts on her son's distinctive voice with the Daily Mail. She remarked: 'He's very articulate. He was born with a dictionary in his mouth. His father was an English teacher so that's where he gets it from.'
She added humorously: 'He doesn't get it from me unfortunately. He's always been like that which is great. Sometimes I don't understand what he says, but yeah it is good.'
During a recent episode, viewers witnessed Tom showcasing a completely different voice, leaving fans questioning which version was authentic. When discussing his dating life with Lisa Riley, Tom demonstrated his 'masculine side' by adopting a husky voice to flirt with Kelly Brook.
The sudden vocal transformation prompted Jack Osbourne to ask: 'Wait, Tom, you're gay?' - to which Tom jokingly referred to himself as a 'beacon of butch'.
Speaking later in the Bush Telegraph, Tom maintained the performance: 'You know what, that Tom character with all the fancy language, it is so exhausting. Much nicer to hang in here.' Then, reverting to his familiar voice, he questioned himself: 'Oh God, what's wrong with me?'
Fans took to social media to express their confusion, with one writing: 'Tom's manly voice is so good he's got the nation confused on which one's real.' Another added: 'It's hard to tell which voice is the real Tom.'
However, Celebs Go Dating colleague Anna Williamson has previously confirmed the authenticity of Tom's distinctive speaking style. She joked: 'It's probably the most common question everybody says, 'does he really talk like that?' I can now clarify, absolutely, Tom Read Wilson speaks like that. He's a trained actor but that is not an act.'
