Tim Gunn Opens Up About 43 Years of Celibacy Following Devastating Heartbreak

Fashion icon and Project Runway alum Tim Gunn has revealed a deeply personal chapter of his life, disclosing that heartbreak led him to embrace celibacy for the past 43 years. The 72-year-old fashion consultant shared this intimate detail during a candid appearance on Chelsea Handler's podcast this Thursday.

A Betrayal That Changed Everything

Gunn recounted how, at the age of 29, he discovered his longtime partner—the only person he had ever been with—was unfaithful. This betrayal occurred during the early days of the AIDS crisis in 1982, a period when the disease was poorly understood and widely feared.

"I had a very serious nine-year relationship in Washington, DC, and I loved this person deeply and would have done anything for him," Gunn explained. "And I still remember the night that it all ended. We were in bed watching M*A*S*H… and he said to me, 'I have no patience for you any longer. I want you to leave.'"

The fashion mentor described leaving the apartment in a state of emotional turmoil. "I had to pull off because I was hyperventilating. I was beside myself with self-flagellation and self-pity, and it was awful," he recalled.

The AIDS Crisis Amplified the Trauma

What made the situation even more devastating was the revelation that followed. Gunn's ex-boyfriend admitted to sleeping with multiple partners during their relationship, at a time when the AIDS epidemic was beginning to take hold.

"He was the only person I'd ever been with. And this is the advent of AIDS. It's 1982," Gunn said. "The self pity then turned to completely unbridled anger because I thought he may have given me a death sentence."

For a decade following the breakup, Gunn underwent HIV testing every six months, living with the constant fear that he might have contracted the virus. "Thankfully I had a clean slate," he noted, but the psychological scars ran deep.

How the Experience Shaped His Future

The trauma fundamentally altered Gunn's approach to intimacy and relationships. "Whenever I was even tempted to engage in something that could become serious with someone, all this would come back like Niagara Falls, and it would just take the desire away," he confessed.

Despite the challenges, Gunn has come to terms with his celibate lifestyle. "And I have to say, being celibate and being someone who lives alone was a bit of an adjustment. But now I wouldn't have it any other way," he concluded.

Project Runway Departure and Career Reflections

During the same podcast appearance, Gunn also addressed his departure from Project Runway, the show that made him a household name. He revealed that producers did not invite him to return for the show's continuation.

"I'll be perfectly transparent about it. I wasn't invited to the party," Gunn stated. "My agent called the producers to say, 'We understand Heidi signed up. We haven't heard a thing about Tim.' And they said 'We don't want him.'"

Initially, the news was "devastating," but Gunn has since found perspective. "But, as I said earlier, things happen for a reason. And I feel extremely lucky to have had 19 seasons of the show. 16 with Heidi. And I have a beautiful Emmy sitting on my kitchen counter. So, no complaints," he added.

Gunn rose to fame in 2004 when he joined Project Runway as a mentor to aspiring designers, becoming known for his calm, supportive demeanor and iconic catchphrase, "Make it work." His popularity led to two spin-off series: Bravo's Tim Gunn's Guide to Style and Lifetime's Under the Gunn.

Beyond television, Gunn has an impressive academic and professional background. He served as a long-time faculty member at Parsons School of Design from 1982 to 2007, leading the fashion design department from 2000 to 2007, before moving to Liz Claiborne as chief creative officer.

As Project Runway prepares for its 22nd season, set to debut in 2026, Gunn's legacy on the show remains significant, even as he has moved forward with his life and career.
