Chinese actress Tang Wei has confirmed she is pregnant with her second child. The 46-year-old shared the news on Instagram following growing speculation from Asian media outlets.
In a surprising twist, the A-lister indicated that the pregnancy was unplanned. 'It is a big surprise, and I am very happy,' she wrote. 'Everyone is really excited about it.'
It will be Wei's second child with her director husband Kim Tae-yong, following the birth of their daughter Summer in 2016.
Fans first suspected that Wei was pregnant after she appeared at an event for the luxury brand Burberry on Monday with what looked like a noticeable baby bump.
Wei, who is one of Burberry's celebrity ambassadors, wore a loose black babydoll dress and trench coat to the event, but her oversized attire wasn't enough to mask her midsection.
The news has come as a shock to fans of the star, as she recently landed a huge role in South Korean director Park Chan-wook's next Hollywood film. Chan-wook, best known for the cult classic Oldboy, recently lined up an A-list cast for his next project, The Brigands of Rattlecreek.
In addition to Wei, the thriller will star Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey, along with Austin Butler and Pedro Pascal. The film's synopsis reads, 'A capstone of the themes Park Chan-wook has plumbed across his entire body of work to date, the film is an emotionally explosive and visually stunning meditation on the consequences of violence, the value of family, the power of memory, and the true cost of life.'
Chan-wook made his English-language debut with 2013's Stoker, starring Nicole Kidman. Wei previously starred in Chan-wook's 2022 film, Decision to Leave, which was nominated for an Academy award.
Wei has dabbled in Hollywood before, most notably alongside Chris Hemsworth in Michael Mann's Blackhat.
The Hangzhou-born beauty first shot to fame in Ang Lee's controversial 2007 film, Lust, Caution. The erotic spy film received widespread critical acclaim and was an international box office hit, but was banned in China for years due to its explicit sex scenes.
Wei is now one of Asia's most popular actresses. She is the first and only non-Korean to win Best Actress at the Baeksang Arts Awards, which is considered South Korea's version of the Golden Globes.
Outside of acting, Wei is one of China's most successful celebrities when it comes to brand endorsements. She is a longstanding global brand ambassador for Japanese skincare brand SK-II and was the first global ambassador for Charlotte Tilbury. Her other brand deals include Swiss watchmaker Piaget, Spanish luxury fashion house Loewe, as well as Chopard and Burberry.
