Scotland's youngest World Cup team player has a famous dad and a 'proud' brother. The 19-year-old Manchester United midfielder is the youngest player selected by Steve Clarke for the Scotland World Cup squad.
We are now just hours away from the Scotland World Cup team making their highly anticipated comeback to the tournament after 28 years. Scotland are being represented by 26 talented players who will take to the pitch for their first of three World Cup games at Boston Stadium, usually known as Gilette Stadium, on Saturday, June 13 at 9pm local time.
One of the most striking things about Steve Clarke's Scotland team is the range of ages among the footballers with the oldest player being goalie Craig Gordon at 43-years-old, who made his Scotland debut 22 years ago, before three of his team mates were even born. Among the youngest Scots are 20-year-old midfielder Ben Gannon-Doak from Dalry in Ayrshire and midfielder Findlay Curtis, also 20, from Balfron.
However, the baby of the Scotland team is actually still a teenager who was called in at the last minute to replace Napoli midfielder Billy Gilmour, 24, after he sustained a knee injury.
Before Tyler Fletcher, 19 received his shock call up, the Fletcher family were due to go to the World Cup as fans this summer. However, after the Manchester United star made his international debut as a half-time replacement during Scotland's 4-1 friendly win over Curacao at Hampden on May 30, he appeared to have caught Steve Clarke's eye.
Football runs in the teen's veins as his father is former Scotland captain Darren Fletcher and his twin brother is also a Manchester United midfielder, but in terms of international football, has chosen to represent England instead. Here's everything we know about the teen who is the youngest on the Scotland World Cup squad.
Family Life
Fletcher was already a well known name to Scots fans ahead of the teen being announced for the squad due to his father being former Scotland captain and former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher. Tyler and his twin brother Jack were both born in March 2007 and were raised in Manchester, where their mother, Hayley Grice is from. Fletcher, who hails from Dalkeith, tied the knot with Hayley in 2010 at St Ambrose Catholic Church in Hale three years after they welcomed their sons. Both Tyler and Jack have followed in their dad's footsteps and are both currently central midfielders at Manchester United.
Sibling Rivalry
Tyler and his brother Jack are both capped internationally and while they both started with England's under-16's, Tyler has now switched nationalities to Scotland, following in his father's footsteps. Darren Fletcher, capped 80 times by Scotland, never played in a major tournament, so is likely to be delighted his son is getting to experience such a special moment for Scotland. Jack is also going to the World Cup, but will be representing England. Tyler and Jack previously played against each other in November 2025 during a Under-19s European Championship qualifier between Scotland and England. Despite playing opposing teams with a deep rooted rivalry, Tyler and Jack appear to be very close with Jack regularly leaving messages of support on Tyler's Instagram posts. In his most recent post, Tyler wrote: 'A dream come true to make my debut for @manutd. Proud moment for me and my family hopefully many more to come.' Jack replied: 'Proud bro.'
Sporting Career
The boys started out at Manchester City Academy for nine years before making the move to United for a reported £1.25m when they were 16-years-old. In April 2024, Tyler shared on Instagram that he had signed his first professional contract with Manchester United. He was also honoured with U21 player of the year this season with Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers and Wayne Rooney praising the youngster for his achievement. However, in his sporting career the teen has only played 17 minutes of professional football, after just two senior substitute appearances, which came on the final day of the Premier League season at Brighton. Saying that, he did enough to impress Steve Clarke after receiving a shock World Cup call up despite Scotland fans being divided by this decision. After he was called into Clarke's Scotland training camp, he earned himself a bench on the place for the pre-tournament friendly with Curaco last month. Once there, Fletcher appeared to make a hugely positive impression on Scotland's coaches and is now in the US with the rest of the Scotland squad for the World Cup.
