Sara Foster, the 44-year-old daughter of music mogul David Foster, has revealed a surprising and awkward chapter from her past: a failed set-up date with Hollywood icon George Clooney roughly three decades ago.
The Ill-Fated Matchmaking Attempt
Speaking on The World’s First Podcast with her sister Erin, Foster recounted how supermodel Cindy Crawford and her husband, Rande Gerber, attempted to play cupid. The meeting occurred when Foster was approximately 24 years old, meaning the incident dates back around 30 years. The foursome met in person, but Foster insists the chemistry was non-existent from the very start.
"I got set up with George Clooney, like, 30 years ago. It was such a blah. Sorry, I had to say it," Foster stated bluntly. Her immediate impression was decidedly negative. "It was just such a hard no," she said, recalling her first thought: "Oh, he is so old."
An Awkward Encounter and Emotional Spill
Foster elaborated that she felt "offended" by the matchmaking attempt purely because of the perceived age gap. She reflected more broadly on such relationships, admitting, "I’ve never understood a 19-year-old that’s into a 40-year-old. I just always thought that was so weird."
The situation deteriorated further when Foster, who was already heartbroken over a previous boyfriend, became emotional. "I’m sure George Clooney is a nice guy, but I just remember it being the four of us sitting there and thinking like, ‘I’m gonna die,’" she confessed. The encounter left her feeling depressed, compounded by her existing sadness.
She also clarified that the set-up likely wasn't Clooney's idea, suggesting it was more a case of Crawford and Gerber thinking they knew two people who might hit it off. The date concluded with an embarrassing admission from Foster: "I don’t think he was that into it either. I started crying about my ex to him. So I think he was like, ‘This chick’s not OK,’" she explained with a laugh.
Moving On: Foster's and Clooney's Paths Since
Foster eventually moved on from both her ex and the brief Clooney encounter. She found a long-term partnership with former tennis professional Tommy Haas in the mid-2000s. The couple got engaged in 2009 and, though they never married, Foster described their relationship as being "basically married." They share two daughters, Valentina and Josephine. News emerged in August 2024 that the pair had split, but they remain focused on co-parenting.
George Clooney, famously one of Hollywood's most eligible bachelors for years, finally settled down. He married human rights lawyer Amal Clooney in September 2014. The couple are parents to twins Alexander and Ella, aged eight. Clooney has often spoken about how meeting Amal transformed his views on life and love.
