Rochelle Humes Opens Up About Household Help and Family Dynamics
Rochelle Humes has candidly revealed that she employs household assistance six days a week to manage her demanding career and family responsibilities. The former Saturdays singer, 37, shared these personal details during an appearance on the Great Company podcast with Jamie Laing, explaining how this support enables her professional success.
Balancing Career and Motherhood with Practical Support
Rochelle Humes disclosed that she has a woman who assists her from Monday through Saturday mornings, describing this helper as "incredible" for helping to "hold the fort down" while she and her husband pursue their careers. The television presenter and singer emphasized her transparency about this arrangement, stating: "I don't want to sit on podcasts like this and act like I don't have help – we have help!"
She clarified that this person functions more as a household helper than a traditional nanny, explaining: "When Marvin is at his radio show and I am somewhere like here, she is there until I get back." Rochelle shares three children with her JLS singer husband Marvin Humes, 41: daughters Alaia, 12, and Valentina, nine, along with son Blake, five.
Family Reactions and Personal Challenges
While comfortable discussing her domestic help publicly, Rochelle admitted that telling her mother, Roz Wiseman, proved far more daunting. She recalled her mother's initial reaction: "The first response from her was, 'no one's looking after my grandkids but me.' Also she was like, 'oh so you are too good to do your washing up now are you.'"
Rochelle described her mother as "outraged" initially, with Roz questioning: "I don't know who you two think you are." The television personality explained she simply needed assistance to manage her professional commitments alongside family life.
Addressing Her Estranged Father and Finding Male Role Models
In the same revealing interview, Rochelle discussed her complicated relationship with her absent father, Mark Piper, who left when she was just one year old. She expressed that she will "never respect" him as a person, explaining: "I don't really remember him. I remember waiting for him at the window on the weekends which ended quickly because he just didn't come."
The turning point came when Rochelle welcomed her first child, Alaia, in 2013. She revealed: "The day I had Alaia I instantly had zero curiosity to get to know my dad and I would never respect him as a person, he is not someone I would choose to spend time with." Mark Piper went on to have three other children, including Love Island star Sophie Piper, with whom Rochelle has since reconnected after 23 years.
Paul Ince as a Father Figure and Wedding Role
Despite her father's absence, Rochelle found a significant male role model in footballer Paul Ince, who she refers to as her "uncle" though they are not blood relations. The former England captain, who played for Manchester United and West Ham, became an important presence in her life.
Rochelle explained: "My uncle Paul would come and he played football for England, he is Paul Ince and was playing for England, he gave me away at my wedding and Marv had to ask Paul to marry me." She described attending West Ham matches every weekend with him and emphasized: "He was really that male role model that I looked up to."
The connection stems from the close friendship between Rochelle's mother and Paul Ince's wife, Claire. Rochelle noted: "I never felt like I didn't have a male figure around because he always made time for me, like every single weekend." This supportive relationship culminated in Paul Ince walking her down the aisle when she married Marvin Humes in 2012.
Through these revelations, Rochelle Humes presents a nuanced picture of modern family dynamics, career pressures, and the importance of both practical support and emotional connections in navigating complex personal histories.
